Customer: "No veal, thanks. I know what happens to the calves."
Butcher: "So do I. Which bit do you know?"
Customer: "Crates. Taken off the mother, kept in the dark, can't turn round."
Butcher: "Banned here in 1990. This one had straw, a shed, and other calves to annoy for eight months. Rose veal, we call it. Pink, not white."
Customer: "It's still a baby cow."
Butcher: "It's a dairy bull calf. Where do you think they went before people bought veal?"
Customer: "Reared for beef?"
Butcher: "A Holstein bull doesn't make beef worth the feed. For years the answer was a bolt in the head at a day old. Tens of thousands a year, in this country, shot in the pen because nobody would eat them. The industry only promised to stop that a couple of years ago."
Customer: "That's horrific."
Butcher: "That's the price of a latte. Every pint of milk needs a cow in calf every year, and half the calves are boys."
Customer: "So eating the veal..."
Butcher: "Gives him eight months in a shed instead of eight minutes. The customer who won't touch veal and buys a flat white has made a choice. She just didn't get told what it was."
Customer: "I'll take a kilo."
Butcher: "Good. And the next person who tells you veal is cruel, ask them what they take in their coffee."

University debate: "Carbs are the body's preferred fuel. Ketosis is the emergency generator."
Dietician: "Give the body carbohydrate and fat together and it burns the carbohydrate first. That's what preferred means."
Anthropologist: "And if I add a whisky?"
Dietician: "It burns the alcohol before anything."
Anthropologist: "So whisky is the body's preferred fuel."
Dietician: "Obviously not. Alcohol goes first because the body can't store it and can't leave it lying around."
Anthropologist: "Good. Hold on to that. How much carbohydrate can you store?"
Dietician: "About 500 grams. Liver and muscle."
Anthropologist: "2,000 calories. One day. And fat?"
Dietician: "It varies."
Anthropologist: "A lean person carries 80,000. Two months. So the body burns first whatever it has least room for. You've just explained that to me using whisky, and then called it a preference when it's bread."
Dietician: "The brain needs glucose. 130 grams a day."
Anthropologist: "On your diet. Offer it ketones and it takes up to two thirds of its energy from them, and the liver makes what's left. How much glucose is in your whole bloodstream at this moment?"
Dietician: "Around 5 grams."
Anthropologist: "A teaspoon. Much more than that damages blood vessels, so the body drops everything to clear it. I've seen bouncers treat people that way. I wouldn't call them preferred."
Dietician: "Ketosis only appears when you're starving. That is an emergency."
Anthropologist: "It appears within a day of the carbohydrate running out, fed or not. Where was the starch in northern Europe in January, for half a million years? You've filed every winter our species ever had under emergency."
Dietician: "Nobody is in ketosis as a normal state."
Anthropologist: "Every newborn is. Within days of birth, on breast milk, with half its calories from fat. The fastest brain growth in nature runs on your back-up system."
Dietician: "Then why do people feel dreadful when they cut carbs?"
Anthropologist: "For about a week. Take a leg out of plaster after forty years and it won't feel marvellous on the stairs either."
Moderator: "Closing statements."
Anthropologist: "The mains runs out by tomorrow lunchtime. The generator has two months in the tank and was switched on at birth. I'd ask which one the house was built around."

Time is a scam.

Months are a fucking scam, and the more you think about them, the more ridiculous they get.
A minute has 60 seconds. An hour has 60 minutes. A week has 7 days. Lovely. Everything makes sense. Then some bastard invented months and decided they'd be 28, 29, 30 or 31 days long. Pick a fucking number.
And why do we keep saying a month is four weeks? That's 28 days. Only February manages that, and even February can't behave itself every four years.
Now here's where it gets funny.
Women are told pregnancy lasts nine months. Then they get pregnant and the doctors start talking about 40 weeks. That's ten lots of four weeks. Imagine finding out you've got an extra month on your sentence. You've been stitched up before the baby's even arrived.
And a year? Twelve months, apparently. Yet we've got 52 weeks. Divide that into four-week blocks and you get THIRTEEN.
Before some clever bastard starts, yes, I know actual calendar months are longer than four weeks. That's the whole bloody point.
We've somehow invented a system where everyone knows what a month is until you ask how long one lasts.
Whoever designed this calendar was taking the piss.
