And what’s beautiful within the poem in Pale Fire is within this curious dynamic where it’s subsuming its own implicitly acknowledged kitschyness, or overwroughtness — it’s too much, and it *also* works (Wallace Stevens and Claire-Louise Bennett do this really, really well)

Brazil: remarkable comeback by Lula, making history to become the first candidate in Brazil's restored democracy to win after trailing in the first round. And his victory breaks the trend of right-wing victories in Latin America.

went to visit a friend who’s a ceramicist and works in a studio with no phone signal in a tiny yorkshire village. he doesn’t listen to podcasts or music, only occasionally uses the radio, and when I asked him what he thinks about all day he just said “well, pots mostly”

I’ve been reading, relishing and occasionally teaching Ulysses for 25 years now and am still astounded by the audacity and brilliance of Joyce’s updating/parodying Homer’s Odyssey into just one day of twentieth-century Dublin. It’s so human, so profound, so damn funny.

Yes, culling might seem cruel, but ultimately it is vital for the health of the herd:

I was lucky enough to have a beautiful pond handy when I read @SallyBayley1's luminescent new novel. But you can enjoy it anywhere! Coming in September and highly recommended #pondlife

This is remarkable footage from Barcelon, summer 1936. One minute journey through the revolutionary city. The lack of women on the streets is shocking. Perhaps due to time filmed they were at home cooking but I don't know. I expected more weapons but as the weeks passed by, more at the front. Via the Hearst Metronome collection.

I’m delighted to be doing this event on 13th November, telling the story of how Ukraine finally broke free of Russia’s baleful hold and how since 2014 it has been a willing to pay the highest price to keep its independence. Nearly sold out but do come! buytickets.at/foccal

Neither man could possibly have imagined that just one generation later, Europe would be defending itself against both of their future successors.
What is happening is truly unfathomable.

Remembering the 1985 Whitbread Prize, won by the late Douglas Dunn’s Elegies over Ackroyd’s Hawksmoor and Winterson’s Oranges. ‘To prove our love, each gull, each gull, each gull turned into dove’. A very good year. @johnhaffenden
The new Prime Minister is writing a "10-year plan" for the UK. The arts and culture MUST be part of it. I've signed @_CFTA's petition urging @AndyBurnham to revitalise the arts – to revitalise the whole nation 🌱 Please join me: campaignforthearts.org/petit…

Again pure unthinkable terrorism.
A horrific Russian strike in the Kharkiv region. A “shahed” struck people directly – in a park near an ordinary café. Pure atrocity. Six people were killed, including children. A little girl was killed in a stroller – her name was Angelina, she was just over a year old, born in August 2025… Her mother’s name was Inna. She died in the hospital… Another girl who was killed was 11 years old. My condolences to their families and loved ones. Another 14 people were injured, including six more children.
I am grateful to everyone who supports Ukraine under these circumstances and helps us shoot down “shaheds,” shoot down missiles, and stop Russian assaults. These are horrific photos, but behind them are shattered lives and the truth about this war. Lives must be protected. Ukraine needs air defense. You can't think about making money with Russia as long as it continues its asinine war. We ask that sanctions on Russia stay in place as long as the killings continue. We ask America to be strong, and we ask it to apply the Lindsey Graham law. We ask Europe to continue its support. We ask that everything possible be done to bring peace and guarantee security. Ukraine wants peace. It is Russia that has insisted on continuing the killing all this time. The world has enough strength to stop the war. That strength must finally be used – against the murderers.

Just discovered that in the 19th century, smoke enema kits were sited at various points along the side of the Thames, as pumping tobacco smoke up the rectum was thought to be the best way to resuscitate someone who had been drowning.

Much punchier accusations from Sir Malcolm Rifkind - a former defence and foreign secretary:
"I choose my words very carefully. I think this week Donald Trump has shown himself as a person to be repulsive; as a President of the United States to be a disgrace to his own people as well as to his international responsibilities.
"We all know his actual reasons for this are a grubby attempt to win a few more votes in the midterms by trying to get oil prices down.
"In order to achieve that, he has not only betrayed Ukraine in the middle of a war, fighting for its very existence, but he is also directly - not indirectly - directly responsible for the deaths of many Ukrainians who will not now be protected by the attempts that have been successfully made using intelligence provided indirectly by the United States."
