I think a more appropriate comparison would be American Life-Madonna got blacklisted a year before Janet but found other ways around to be successful like touring and international markets. The key thing-she NEVER apologized, not in 1993 or 2003. People respected her for that. Neither deserved the backlash though.

When Madonna "Erotica" era including her sex book in 1992..it hit Madonna's career hard but she was still able to tour in 1993 the Girlie Tour and get radio play! When she came with "I'll Remember" in 1994 it gave her a softer image! Then she came "Bedtime Stories" at the end of 1994 and she was back the mainstream graces!
When Janet Jackson "Damita Jo" era including the Superbowl in 2004 it hit Janet's career hard, she didn't get to tour, no radio play for 4 years! Janet didn't tour until 2008 and she never really got back to where she was when it came to mainstream!
