Most leadership lessons from Band of Brothers miss the point.
The best scene in 10 episodes has no combat in it.
It's the old men at the end. 50 years later, cameras rolling, talking about each other.
I wrote about it. Read it. Tell me what you think. open.substack.com/pub/christ…

"Beauty will save the world."
— Fyodor Dostoevsky, The Idiot
Good morning. Michelangelo was in his early twenties when he carved this out of a single block of marble. It's the only work he ever signed.
Start your day with something beautiful before the doom feed consumes you.
Embrace beauty, reject doom, my friends ✨
All knowledge, no wisdom.
The cult of self can quote Marcus forever.
It can’t do what echoes in eternity.
That face you make when you read the Meditations of Marcus Aurelius 195 times and build an entire career off promoting stoic philosophy but still don't know what it means or how to apply it to your own life.
This is modern intellectualism in a nutshell.
All knowledge, no wisdom.
Virtue signalling without virtue.
The friendships of your 20s were handed to you.
The dorm. Team. Unit.
After 40, no one hands you anything.
You sit in an empty room and keep knocking.
You show up with a rake on a Saturday.
You call the man you’ve been meaning to call for 3 years.
To have a brother, be a brother.
We know He is risen.
The proof will keep growing.
Written account of Jesus rising from the dead identified in 2,000-year-old manuscript, study suggests trib.al/XFIwGJj
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
This research compares later Greek, Latin, Arabic and Syriac copies to reconstruct what Josephus may have written around AD 93–94; it did not identify an account in a 2,000-year-old physical manuscript. joe.co.uk/news/ancient-j… wsjfreeexpression.substack.com/p/unlocking-th…
Go walk in the autumn woods.
If you can't, stop and read a poem about the wild things.
The Peace of Wild Things
by Wendell Berry
When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children’s lives might be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting with their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.
Frodo carried the Ring.
Sam carried Frodo.
Every man past 40 has something he can’t carry alone. Few have a man who’ll carry him.
Be that man first. Then you’ll find yours. 👇

At 7 AM this morning I got together with a small group of fellow Christian men at a local coffee shop.
There were a couple of new guys, we introduced ourselves around and one by one caught up on what's been going on in our lives in the last couple of weeks.
One of the guys has a son who is an NFL player who hadn't spoken to him in 13 years, but suddenly the relationship restarted.
Here's what he told us that caused the change:
Think of the man who would’ve shown up with a truck and helped you carry a couch up 3 flights of stairs in your 20s.
No questions. Just showed up. You know the one.
When was the last time you actually heard his voice?
Give him a call. Do it today. The first 40 seconds will be awkward. Then you’ll remember why he matters.

"Woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up."
Ecclesiastes 4:10.
That is God's verdict on the self-made man. 🧵
If you can't handle yourself in all seasons you have work to do.
(We all have work to do.) 👇
A gentleman needs to know what time it is.
A time to be gentle, or a time to be dangerous.
A time to speak, or a time to stay silent.
A time to laugh with your brothers, or a time to hold them accountable.
A time to lead, or a time to follow.
A time to be a lover, or a time to be a protector.
A time to be a diplomat, or a time to be a fighter.
The hard part is knowing which hour you're in.
Learn it, Gents. Be capable in every arena. Then be the man that hour needs.
Carry on 🫡

5/ To have a brother, be a brother.
And the Friend who sticks closer than any of them is the One you pray to while the room is still empty.
