Now that we're regularly seeing HSI agents popping up in routine immigration raids & even patrolling DC streets, it’s worth asking: what 𝑠ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑙𝑑 HSI be doing? Let’s reintroduce the agency & its vital public safety mission. 🧵

Numbers will initially be small for this 'one in one out' Channel crossings deal, but it's the best chance we have right now for tackling the small boats issue.

Today's SCOTUS decision on birthright citizenship technically lets the Trump administration start working on taking it away. The court is letting agencies develop & issue guidance on the Executive Order
But lower courts may quickly act to stop that
Replying to @KathleenBushJo2
"The injunctions are also stayed to the extent that they prohibit executive agencies from developing and issuing public guidance about the Executive’s plans to implement the Executive Order....

Trying to help with understanding SCOTUS' birthright decision:
A "class" is a term describing a group--generally, that group needs to have similar characteristics & experience harms from a product or policy
The opioid class actions are an example

⚖️Key stats from us as you think about today's SCOTUS #birthrightcitizenship decision.
Repealing birthright citizenship would *increase* the U.S. unauthorized population, contrary to its stated aim.
Our projections with @psupopresearch show 5.4 million more unauthorized residents by 2075 if birthright citizenship ends. This & more⬇️

If SCOTUS limits lower courts' use of nationwide injunctions tomorrow, that could disproportionately impact immigration policy, which is largely driven by executive actions due to congressional inaction
So I'm resharing my piece on judges setting immigration policy

About 255,000 babies born each year on U.S. soil would lack U.S. citizenship if the proposed repeal of birthright citizenship takes effect

Noncitizens are not allowed to vote in federal or state elections in the U.S. This has been the law across the country since 1924 + there’s no evidence of widespread noncitizen voting.

As of today (April 11), several million immigrants in the US—incl. some with legal status—must register with the federal government or face possible consequences
It’s the latest iteration of a security authority previously used after 9/11 and during the Cold War era

ALT "Although it has some historical precedent, the Trump administration’s mandate for registration has one distinct contrast with prior uses. Unlike in the past, this is not a time of active warfare, nor has there been an attack on U.S. soil akin to 9/11. The new requirement is designed to collect information the government does not already have and will contribute to the chilling effect on unauthorized immigrant communities. Given already stepped-up enforcement and a general anxiety among unauthorized immigrants nationwide, it remains to be seen how many people will register."

JUST IN — The Supreme Court partially allows a lower court order that requires the Trump administration to “facilitate” and “effectuate” the return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, the man erroneously deported.
But the high court asks the lower court to clarify what “effectuate” means.

SCOTUS allows Alien Enemies Act deportations to proceed. This is a decision with huge implications for the executive branch's efforts to quickly remove immigrants
Vacated lower court orders that stopped deports under AEA, but requires "notice of removal subject to the act"

Brutal financing cuts in humanitarian aid are not a funding shortfall.
They are a crisis of responsibility.
Millions of innocent people are at risk.
The cost of inaction will be measured in more instability and in many lost lives.

That an administration so keenly aware of branding would walk away from a USAID brand known around the world — its logo on countless shipments of food, tents & medication for decades — is zeroing out massive name recognition & soft power
