Advancing India’s marine research and scientific capabilities!
Dr. Srinivasa Kumar Tummala (@tummalasrini), Secretary, Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), visited the Centre for Marine Living Resources and Ecology (@cmlre_kochi) today to review its ongoing activities, research programmes and scientific contributions.
During the visit, he inaugurated key facilities, released a technical manual and toured various laboratories to gain insights into the Centre’s research infrastructure, scientific work and ongoing initiatives in marine living resources.
The visit provided an opportunity to review CMLRE’s progress in marine biodiversity research, deep-sea exploration and the sustainable utilisation of marine living resources.
CMLRE continues to contribute to strengthening India’s understanding of marine ecosystems through scientific research, technological advancements and dedicated efforts towards the exploration and sustainable management of ocean resources.

MoES–NIOT celebrated its 33rd Foundation Day on 5 November 2026 in the august presence of Shri A. Srinath, Hon’ble Minister for Fisheries and Fishermen Welfare, Government of Tamil Nadu, and Dr. T. Srinivasa Kumar, Hon’ble Secretary, Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India.
On the occasion, Prof. Balaji Ramakrishnan, Director, NIOT, presented an overview of NIOT’s activities and achievements. The Foundation Day Lecture was delivered by Mr. Lane J. Abrams, Senior Engineer, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), USA.
Employees who completed 25 years of dedicated service were felicitated in recognition of their valuable contributions to the Institute. The winner of the Ocean Hackathon was also honoured with the presentation of the prize.
The celebration marked an important milestone in NIOT’s continued commitment to advancing ocean science and technology and contributing to the nation’s maritime and oceanographic research endeavours.

Advancing India’s deep-ocean exploration and marine research capabilities! 🌊
Dr. Srinivasa Kumar Tummala (@tummalasrini), Secretary, Ministry of Earth Sciences (@moesgoi), along with the Director, @MoesNiot, visited L&T Shipyard at Kattupalli, Tamil Nadu, to review the progress of dry dock activities of the MoES-NIOT research vessel Sagar Manjusha.
Dr. Tummala also witnessed the ongoing unmanned trials of the human submersible MATSYA6000, assessing its floatation, submerged stability, ballast systems and various subcomponents. The vehicle successfully completed the tests as per the prescribed test protocol, paving the way for the next phase of testing.
These milestones strengthen India’s indigenous capabilities in deep-sea exploration and advance the vision of exploring the depths of our oceans.
