More fun publisher surveillance:
Elsevier embeds a hash in the PDF metadata that is *unique for each time a PDF is downloaded*, this is a diff between metadata from two of the same paper. Combined with access timestamps, they can uniquely identify the source of any shared PDFs.

The CDC recommends you wake in the morning and you step outside and you take a deep breath and you get real high and you scream at the top of your lungs WHAT’S GOING ON
I’ve so far fielded one reference request related to this tweet, specifically the etymology of no. 1. Here’s where any knowledge of Greek would be coming in handy…

After 160+ exciting sessions across three time zones, #WLIC2021 has concluded.
Thank you to our delegates and speakers for taking part so enthusiastically over the last three days!
Let's turn the lessons learnt into positive actions for the field! More: bit.ly/3gfDWPX
"What has given you new perspective? ... What will you do next?" two of the important questions for participants as #WLIC2021 comes to a close. #libraries #FoodforThought #librarians
Working together with other #libraries, as well as other organizations and institutions can help amplify our voices, raise awareness, and go further, do better, do more, and "make a habit of working together". #WLIC2021
"Working together is actually hard" -- too true; moving forward solo does not require communicating with others, listening to others, changing perspectives, and adapting behaviors. #libraries #WLIC2021 #FoodforThought
"The challenge is to maintain this energy when we return to our jobs and become immersed" in the day-to-day work. Agree with Christine Mackenzie -- will be interesting to see how the experience of reentry is the same or different from after in-person conferences. #WLIC2021
In looking at contracts for #eresources, consider patron #privacy. How to vendors handle patron information, how can settings be customized by #libraries, etc. are all important questions to address. #WLIC2021 #libraries
Gietz, Westerbeke explain that identity providers can configure settings in accordance with FIM4L principles and recommendations to only send personally identifiable attributes to trusted service providers. #WLIC2021 #privacy #eresources
Challenge identified by an attendee in preservation of patron #privacy: use of an individual's email address is used as an attribute in the login credentials is cause of concern #WLIC2021 #libraries

Federated identity management (FIM): login done with identity provider (#libraries), who manage authentication, then the patron reconnects anonymously to the #eresources. #WLIC2021 #privacy
There are concerns by librarians: people should be able and free to do research, which requires protection of privacy. Common library policy for publishers could ensure consistent protection of patron privacy across publisher platforms. #libraries #privacy #eresources #WLIC2021
