Best wishes and great thanks to Mark Chandler, who retired from the UW Dept of Microbiology on Wednesday. I’m forever grateful for Mark’s partnership in the UW MICRO460 Parasitology course. Thanks for all you’ve done for UW students over the years!

There are no commercial tests for monkeypox in the US - only lab-developed tests (LDTs). LDTs essential for large labs to adapt & pivot as we learn more about tropism including need to test non-lesion specimens. This is precisely why the #VALIDAct would be so problematic.

Pro-lifers don't like complexity. At 17 weeks my placenta detached and he was much too small. I thought I felt my baby's frantic attempts to breathe. My OBGYN advised me to terminate the pregnancy, there wasn't much time. But I couldn't.

Remember when you had to wait 7-10 days for a Covid test? Imagine that happening for all sorts of cutting edge lab tests as labs at your local hospitals across the country are disincentivized to develop novel tests to serve their communities. That is what #VALIDAct will do

It seemed like cases had peaked for this current wave in Washington. But now that we've started to see BA.4 and BA.5 at low levels, this data suggests we might be in for a long tail.
Replying to @trvrb
There is a notable drop in neutralization titer against BA.4 and BA.5 viruses in boosted individuals and individuals with BA.1 breakthrough infections (figure from Qian Wang, David Ho and colleagues biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/…). 11/12

The thing I can't shake is how many of those kids slept in, forgot lunches or homework, had a stressful, rushed tearful morning. Our mornings are like that sometimes. How many parents and siblings and friends assumed they'd reconnect tonight? Try to have a better day tomorrow?

Thanks to info like this I knew thanks to Twitter, I just helped my now COVID+ 71yo mom get an appointment for this morning at a test-to-treat CVS location near her.
Neither she, nor the rest of my family, even knew this was an option. #Paxlovid covid-19-test-to-treat-locat…
PSA: If you’re one of the many testing positive for COVID these days – & have risk factors – there are #Paxlovid💊 you can get (for low or no $) that may help you get better faster.

Incredible: Our US health system is so feeble there is no Covid reporting this weekend. Sometime around Tuesday morning they’ll turn the machines back on and look at the numbers? I predict further increases in hospitalization and HCW depletion, hope the system doesn’t collapse – at Houston, TX

Valuable article on testing capacity.
But why are there are no quotes from laboratory technologists, who perform many of the tests?
The pandemic is having a terrible effect on lab staff, who remain largely absent from the news (there are exceptions).

Mon=Antigen-neg (prior daily testing neg)
Tues=PCR-POS
Wed=Antigen-neg x2 (PCR results return), SYMPTOMATIC (PCR confirmed)

Thx Dr. Reddy for speaking reason. Testing has its place (and I’m a testing guy), but daily testing isn’t it.

We definitely need to keep everyone safe, but the logistics to daily testing are difficult. We are already short staffed, have nearly 70,000 employees. We would need the supplies, staff to test, time employees would have take out of their work day, and handling false positives

When boys and young men are at a higher risk of being hospitalized from side effects of taking the covid vaccine than actually being hospitalized from covid itself, there is every reason to stop the covid vaccine mandates.
