A teenage Jimi Hendrix with his Danelectro guitar outside the family home on Yesler Street in Seattle, around August 1960. The photo comes from his father Al Hendrix's family collection.
You will often see this one captioned as Jimi at 15 with his first electric guitar. He was actually 17 here, born November 27, 1942.
His first electric was a white Supro Ozark, bought in 1959. After it was stolen, Al bought him this Silvertone-branded Danelectro. Jimi hand-painted the name Betty Jean on it, after his girlfriend Betty Jean Morgan.
When he enlisted in the Army in 1961, he had the guitar sent to him at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Six years later he was a star.
