“Tonight we’re sleeping out in the open.” A displaced Palestinian man in Gaza stands beside his family’s tent after the first winter storm flooded it with rainwater and sewage, leaving them with no dry place to spend the night. Within 12 hours of the storm, around 70,000 tents across the Strip were flooded, according to Gaza’s Government Media Office. The water has nowhere to drain.
The Israeli occupation destroyed more than 220,000 metres of sewage pipes and around 15,000 metres of stormwater drains during the genocide, cutting Gaza City’s drainage capacity by more than 80 percent, so when the rain comes, sewage rises with it into the tents. This is the fourth winter Gaza’s displaced have spent under canvas and nylon, and a year into the ceasefire the occupation still restricts the entry of tents, tarps, caravans, fuel and the machinery municipalities need to pump the water away.
