Air Canada now charges $30 per passenger to book flights by phone. The fee took effect Oct. 15, which means a family of four pays an extra $120. The fee doesn’t apply to customers with specialized support needs, including accessibility needs, or when a trip is disrupted by a delay, cancellation or other disruption. Air Canada says phone support itself is unchanged. The airline wants customers to book on its website or app and to offset call centre costs. moneysense.ca/news/air-canad…

Has the way you tip changed over the past few years? 💸 🍽️ 🤔 According to a new survey conducted by Angus Reid for tip-management platform Actual™, two-thirds of tipped hospitality workers in Canada (67%) say their tips have dropped over the past two years. In Ontario it's 72%, up from 39% in 2024. For many, tips aren't a bonus. 43% rely on them for essentials like rent and groceries, and 61% say tip income influences whether they stay in the industry. Meanwhile, a separate consumer survey found 93% of Canadians are annoyed by tip prompts at self-serve locations, and 67% are choosing "no tip" more often than a year ago. BTC is up 42%+ from its July low, back near $83K. But is @Bitcoin making investors money? Timing still decides everything: a 1-year holder is down 27%, a 5-year holder is up almost 90%. In his latest for MoneySense, @DrAdityaNain talks about what's driving the rebound and why crypto investing is a patience game, not a timing one. moneysense.ca/columns/canadi…

A reader sent us this question: "Can I contribute to both a spousal RRSP and RRSP or does it have to be one or the other? Does the same RRSP deduction apply to the spousal RRSP and the RRSP? For example, if I have $10,000 in RRSP contribution room can I contribute $10,000 to my Spousal RRSP and $10,000 to my RRSP? Please clarify this for me." It's a common mix-up. @ManFromAtlantis notes that your contribution room is shared across both accounts, not doubled, and walks through why splitting it between a personal and spousal RRSP can still be a smart income-splitting move, including the two-year rule you need to know before your spouse withdraws anything. Own property or a retirement account in the U.S.? Your Canadian will and power of attorney might not do what you think they do once you're dealing with American institutions. Beneficiary designations can override your will. Executors can lack authority in certain states. Residency changes can trigger tax complications nobody planned for. Cross-border wealth advisor @CarsonHamill breaks down where these estate plans typically fail, and how to actually coordinate them: Read on MoneySense: moneysense.ca/save/financial…

Bond yields are climbing in Canada and the U.S. 📈 Stock markets get all the attention with daily updates and constant analysis. The total value of the Canadian bond market is about 20% larger than the stock market but you rarely hear about it. Despite this, Canadian bond yields influence stock market returns, fixed mortgage rates, and have other broader financial implications. Ontario's rental rules just changed. Unpaid rent notices dropped from 14 days to 7. "Own use" evictions no longer require compensation if the notice is given on or after Sept. 21 and provides at least 120 days’ notice. However, landlords who don't move in within 60 days risk a bad-faith finding. Renovation rules are also changing. Here's what tenants and landlords need to know: moneysense.ca/spend/real-est…

Traders are increasingly betting that the @bankofcanada could end its string of interest rate holds and deliver a hike as early as next month. The Bank has sat comfortably on the sidelines for nearly a year now, content to leave its policy rate unchanged at 2.25% as it waits to see how the economy and inflation will adjust to a series of shocks. Odds have fluctuated sharply over the past few weeks. moneysense.ca/news/bank-of-c…
