These results highlight the importance of limiting artificial light at night (ALAN) to protect populations of threatened seabirds such as Leach’s Storm Petrels, particularly during the peak stranding period of September through October.

Power down for Petrels! @MemorialUSci Student Tori Burt presented her study @PacificSeabirds’ 2023 annual conference in San Diego, CA, finding that turning off lights significantly reduced the number of Leach’s Storm Petrel strandings at a mass stranding site in Bay de Verde, NL.

Last night I captured one of my best images to date. Probably the single most important event in a Guillemot's life. Unable to yet fly, a 3-week-old chick leaps off the cliff, following its dad who will teach it how to fend for itself out at sea over the coming weeks.

Another of our juvenile @UoLperegrine Falcons was caught under the netting at @UniversityLeeds again today. @Popeuel raised the alarm (brilliant work) and I was able to confirm the grim sight of another trapped bird struggling to get free. THREAD 1/12 @ChrisGPackham #peregrine

(1/4) #WSTC8 #BehaSesh2 Personality is common in animals and can influence behaviour, with boldness being the most studied trait. Growing research on seabird personality. We studied adult razorbills to identify personality and its effects on behaviour including migration.

1/4 #WSTC8 #LightSesh #lightattraction has been exhibited by many seabirds & may be contributing to the Leach’s Storm-Petrel population decline. #Stormpetrels amass around light and can subsequently strand on-land, making them vulnerable to starvation, injury, & predation.

Some good news - no oil or oiled birds in Golden Bay just east of Cape St. Mary's. Chris Mooney also counted about 2,000 eiders, 20 Long-tailed Ducks and 6-8 Harlequins. Keep looking.
