Dr Aola Richards was the first woman to be awarded a PhD in Biological Sciences in New Zealand, for which she studied cave wētā. She was a pioneer of entomology, both here in New Zealand and Australia, describing countless species during her lifetime. thepost.co.nz/nz-news/350209…

New paper out today! Using termites adorned with little paper capes, we found that conspicuous stripes captured the attention of jumping spider predators but reduced attacks.

An amazing case of 'cheating' in NZ #insects - where only some individuals of a harmless stonefly mimic the warning colours of an unrelated toxic (cyanide-producing) stonefly @Mol_Ecol @BrodieFoster @GrahamMcC_NZ

Do you know a kid interested in nature, science, or natural history museums? @meganbarkdull_ @ColleenEcology @MoniquePipkin and I wrote a fun paper for @FrontiersIn Young Minds titled "Natural History Collections: What Are They and Why Do We Need Them?"
kids.frontiersin.org/article…

ALT Figure 3 from the publication showing: Three distinct aspects of natural history collections. First, scientists use natural history collections to help with research. Second, the public interacts with natural history collections through museum exhibits, to learn more about biodiversity. Third, you can help collections yourself, by collecting and donating specimens, or volunteering online (Figure credit: Charlotte Welker Holden)!

@KellyJadeGreig tells us about debris cloaking in zopheridae beetles which is passive. These encrustations could be for chemical crypsis, avoiding predation from olfactory hunters like ants. Nothing to see or smell here, just debris! #nzento23
