Joe explains the real reasons behind what is happening in Poland very well. Brussels, with Germany behind it, is putting huge pressure on Poland on two fronts: the euro and migration. Poland committed to adopting the euro when it joined the EU, and the pressure to give up the złoty will only grow. Joining the eurozone would mean handing part of Poland’s reserves, including some of its gold, over to the European Central Bank in Frankfurt, at a time when Poland has been building one of the fastest-growing gold reserves in the world.
On migration, the EU’s new pact requires every member state to accept relocated migrants or pay €20,000 for each one it refuses. For now Poland has won an exemption, but it is only temporary, and Brussels can take it away as soon as it decides the pressure on Poland’s border has eased
