Our math talk focused on using ratio tables to solve 2-digit by 2-digit multiplication without the standard algorithm. Ss halved and doubled numbers to develop number sense, recognize relationships between quantities, and build flexibility in their thinking. #math #numbersense
Ss had an opportunity to play a variety of word games during our literacy period today: Boggle, My Word, and Sidelinks. Each one had a different goal (spelling, word association, etc.). Check out the brilliant connection made in Sidelinks in the comment below. #literacy
Our Halloween dance was a hit with our students yesterday. They had so much fun and raised a lot of money to help improve our school. Happy Halloween everyone! 🎃🧙
Students learned how to make acute angles in math today. Next, they will make obtuse angles and triangles with specific angle requirements.
Students had their first taste of "first past the post" when voting for a new name for our class skeleton. Although we won't be studying government until term 2, we are talking about important concepts now. And its new name is...(Drumroll) George Bobbington III!
We had a fantastic time at our house colour kickoff yesterday. Congratulations to the red team for winning the event yesterday. As a member of the pink team (and former colour champions), we will work to catch up! Fun times!
Math talks focused on landmark numbers and adjusting. Ss also practised their first descriptive writing paragraphs and had sentence starters to help them with organization. Finally, meet our newest member of the skeleton family. Soon, our big skeleton will have a new name!
Ss spent some time today creating their articulated hands in preparation for learning about the skeletal and muscular systems. #STEM #Grade5Science #HumanBodySystems
Today was partner practice day. In math, they worked together to solve word problems using our success criteria. They also practiced writing reading responses. At the end of the day, they used the computer to generate rich words for their upcoming descriptive paragraphs.
Today was our “Ewww, gross!” day! 😝 Students observed a demonstration of the digestive system and learned about the journey food takes through our bodies. They were especially surprised to discover that the small intestine is about 5 metres long using a hose as a visual.
We had a busy two days with the Terry Fox walk/run/roll on Tuesday. Today during an assembly, we observed the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, or #OrangeShirtDay. We had the honour of having Bernice Carnegie talk to the students as well.
Ss learned about the origins of Orange Shirt Day and designed their orange shirts. We also read an article about cells in our body and completed a Venn diagram to compare/contrast them (reading/science expectations).
This is what the whiteboard looks like when your projector conks out. 🤪 Thanks to the students who were incredibly patient and did such a great job participating. A side lesson: when things don't go as planned, roll with the punches. 💪
We started drama circles this week - what a hit! Requests for another round were made several times. Ss also learned about expectations for communication in math class.
Ss worked together to identify strong and weak reading and writing examples. By analyzing examples, they developed a clearer understanding of what’s expected in their own work; it gives Ss ownership because they help create criteria they use to guide and improve their learning.
In science, Ss tested out their reaction time as part of our nervous system investigations. We also began our differentiated cursive writing instruction.
Indoor recess ready. SS learned new games so that they have something productive to do during indoor recesses. At the end of the day, we added another one: Shut the Box.
