September is an opportunity to tweak a handful of classroom practices. What could have the *biggest* impact on creating a positive culture with genuinely high expectations? Crucially, how can we go beyond ‘tips’ & deeply understand the ‘why’ behind these tips? THREAD below! 🧵 1/

Remember this when it comes to creating a “safe space”: some of the toughest, most no-nonsense teachers create the safest spaces—because students know the expectations are high and the boundaries are clear.

Michaela has two grammar schools nearby - one for boys and one for girls.
At 11, top set kids don’t get in. The ones who might have had a chance, sit the exam and don’t pass it.
Then they attend Michaela: we are their consolation prize.
But 5 years later, they get, on average, more than 2 grades higher on their GCSEs thanks to what they and their teachers do: work hard, no excuses, traditional values and teaching, warm/strict discipline, drive, ambition, and above all, the ability to ignore the haters.
They get GCSE grades that compete with Eton that costs over 50k per year.
They (and other lower ability Michaela kids) then do their A levels, do so well to compete with Winchester and other big boarding schools that cost a bomb.
In a school building with no trees, no grass, no sports hall, no car park for the staff to park their cars! With the trains so loud next to us that the heads of year can barely be heard in the asphalt yard.
Then their headteacher posts a ‘Hooray’ online with a few videos of them getting their results.
Happy kids. How lovely. 🥰
But what do the haters do?
ATTACK!
Over and over.
How dare I be happy our kids have done well! Apparently saying ‘hooray’ is ‘crowing’ and ‘over the top’ and I should shut the hell up. How dare I say anything: I should hang my head in shame apparently.
Without irony, these same people post about Jason Arday and how the hate sent his way was unforgivable.
But your hate for me has no bounds.
I said ‘Hooray’.
ONE WORD. ONE F’ing WORD.
You people are the worst hypocrites imaginable.
Inner city kids do incredibly well and you dare to criticise this as some kind of abomination.
Do some inner soul searching.
God knows, you need it.
When our GCSE results come out on Thursday, I expect the hate to come again. That will be despite the comprehensive intake given to us by the council like any other school, kids starting below their chronological reading ages etc.
The hate is always the worst in August: because that is when results come out.
Nothing you all hate more than seeing inner city kids succeed. Videos with brown and black kids celebrating.
You just can’t stand it.
Depraved and disgusting.
That’s what you are.
Finally about to watch my Abbott elementary @AbbottElemABC reruns!!

As a teacher, this is what I want to say to SOME parents:
Stop making excuses for your kids. STOP IT. Teach them to earn things, not demand things. Hold them to a higher standard. Challenge them. That way, when I try to challenge them, they’ll know we both expect it.

I’ve always been of the opinion that fidget spinners/squish toys are the product of social contagion- not SEND - in the majority of instances.
They are alluring/fun and the kid next to you has one so suddenly it becomes a ‘need.’
Glad someone finally worked it out!
Brilliant day today @ArkSoaneAcademy with my colleague.
A few years ago we were inspired by @Mr_Raichura at one of his science events there and today we finally got to see it all in live action! So insightful and refreshing.
A Huge thank you to @NTAScience and her team. Thoughtful practice. High standards. Proper CPD.

Once again, All sparked by the wonderful @Mr_Raichura & how he inspires us with his teaching practice.
My colleague and I loved it and have lots to take back and implement thank you @NTAScience and the science department for an aspirational day!

It's so funny how Science teacher automatically equals medical Doctor to students. Lol
How many times a day are you asked to diagnose something 😩

Absolutely, rushing ahead only hides the gap, it doesn’t close it.
When kids don’t have the basics, every lesson becomes a struggle and every teacher becomes a firefighter.
Strong foundations aren’t “extra time”; they save time by letting children actually learn, not just survive the curriculum.

I think we often have a problem with professional challenge in schools.
I'm a big believer in buy-in and taking people with you. Ultimately though, if you've launched something sensible, explained it properly to colleagues, given them the time and support they need, allowed for discussion and debate, and then a few colleagues *still* aren't doing it? We need to challenge them.
This is one of the top 5 conversations I have with leaders: colleagues need to be treated with respect and dignity, but they also have a job description. Teachers are employees. And we can't just decide "oh I'm not going to do that perfectly reasonable thing that I've been asked to do."

The best teachers I've seen don't use a wide range of activities.
They do a few things, and they do them well. They hone them, practise them, and know exactly when each one should be used and why. The students become habituated to them, and learning goes through the roof.
Thank you very much for the labelling the desk idea @SciInTheMaking I will be using them for turn and talks also.
Can't wait to implement this tomorrow!
Here's to smooth/structured turn and talks.

1. Desk Layout
Desks are arranged in pairs and set in rows as seen in the above tweet. Each pair is labeled with a number and letter A or B to help students find their assigned seats on the first day. It also helps structure Turn and Talks: "Partner A, share with Partner B..."
One of my take aways from today...
Contenders practise until they get it right!
Champions practise until they can't get it wrong!
Teachers will rise to the level of our exectations. If we expect them to practise, they will!
Enjoyed today's ECT mentor conference! @ArkSchools @Steplab_co @Ambition_Inst
