We honestly have a serious problem within the Nigerian community here in the UK, and I think it’s time we started having this conversation openly. One thing I have noticed is that, compared to women from some other African communities, many Nigerian women seem less willing to share household bills and financial responsibilities with their partners, despite the fact that we all understand how expensive life is in the UK and how the system works here. Since 2022, I have attended over 34 burials, and heartbreakingly, about 90% of those who passed away were men. Even more worrying, approximately 50% of them were under the age of 40. I won’t say much more than that, but gentlemen, please hear this: Do not put yourselves under unnecessary financial or emotional pressure trying to satisfy a woman or maintain a lifestyle you cannot comfortably afford. Marriage and relationships should be partnerships, not one-sided financial responsibilities. You should be able to support each other, share responsibilities and build together. Your health, peace of mind and life are far more valuable than trying to impress anyone. Don’t destroy yourself financially or physically trying to meet expectations that should never rest on your shoulders alone. At the end of the day, you will be the one who pays the price.
