Charlie Munger said Heinz's boardroom table cost $600,000. the one at Costco cost about $300.
in the clip below he explains what two tables say about a company.
it was the Daily Journal meeting in February 2022. Munger was 98 and had sat on Costco's board for 25 years.
"the goddamn director's table in Costco cost about three hundred dollars."
"they're different places, different ethos."
then he explains what happens to the fat ones. a buyer like 3G shows up, he says, buys the company and cuts it back to normal.
he knew that story firsthand. in 2013 3G and Berkshire Hathaway bought Heinz together. six years later Kraft Heinz wrote down about $15 billion, and plenty of people said the cutting went too far.
Munger admits that risk. it's possible to over-cut, he says.
"my guess is there's a lot of fat in our successful places."
so is a $300 table the smartest thing a company can buy - or is cost cutting how good brands quietly die?
Option for every UK pensioner
1. Care Home charges huge fees payable by your children from your estate. Reduces both inheritance & inheritance tax.
2. Prison provides equal quality or superior food and amenities. It's free. But maybe sharing a room with the likes of Russell Brand

Andre Wright-Walters beat a pensioner to death in an unprovoked attack.
He’ll be back on the streets in under four years.
That is far too lenient for this killer.
I have written to the Attorney General seeking an urgent review.

If a hotelier or camping site owner takes pity on a poor family and doesn't charge them the tourist tax then they may be sent to jail for 14 years, Labour's tourist tax bill provides.
In a further sign of Labour's obsession with taxes, their bill enables local authorities to pursue any unpaid levies for up to 20 years after they are found to be owed.
Labour don't care about wrecking local tourist industries, it's all about squeezing a bit more tax out of everyone.

A quarter of a century ago, USMC GEN Paul Van Ripper did this exact strategy.
In 2002, he was tapped by the Pentagon to play a adversarial force (red team) modeled after Iran during the $250 million Millennium Challenge 2002 wargame.
General Van Ripper refused to hold back. Cleverly using low-tech, asymmetric tactics, he launched a surprise strike that sank 16 to 19 U.S. warships including an aircraft carrie) within minutes.
Van Rippers tactics were simple: motorcycle couriers, light signals, and coded signals from mosque minarets.
Unhappy with the results, organizers halted the exercise, refloated the ships, and altered the rules to script a Blue Team victory.
General Van Ripper resigned from his advisory role, but spoke out in protest:
"Nothing was learned from this. A culture not willing to think hard and test itself does not augur well for the future."
The U.S. military produced an exercise where "the result was preordained", and not a real test of America's ability to invade a hostile nation.
He was prophetic a 24 years later.
BREAKING: Iran is now completely shifting toward low tech guerrilla warfare and asymmetric tactics in the Strait of Hormuz, deploying speedboats armed with RPGs and magnetic limpet mines to choke off crude shipments, per The Wall Street Journal.
The cost imbalance is staggering: an RPG 7 round costs roughly $400, and limpet mines are described as “cheap and easily available.” Yet a single attack can disable a tanker, as seen when the MT Louise 1 was struck by two devices off Oman. The target is a multimillion dollar asset, with new VLCCs costing around $130 million and resale prices reaching $235 million.
More than 35 incidents were recorded in October, the highest monthly total of the war, with at least five vessels hit in early November, per UKMTO.
