The Federal Government has moved to strengthen the financial sustainability of its student loan scheme, as the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to facilitate cooperation on recovered funds and tighten accountability in the management of public resources. The pact, signed in Abuja yesterday, came against the backdrop of President Bola Tinubu’s directive that all unencumbered liquid funds recovered by the EFCC be transferred to NELFUND to support the long-term financing of student loans. #NELFUNDstudentLoan

NELFUND Disburses ₦163.99m to 3,215 Students of Federal University of Education, Zaria September 20, 2026 The Federal University of Education, Zaria, Kaduna State, has received a total of ₦163,991,400 in education loan support from the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) for the 2025/2026 academic session, benefiting 3,215 students. The institution confirmed the receipt of the funds in a letter dated September 3, 2026, signed by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Yahaya Isa Bunkure, and addressed to the Managing Director/CEO of NELFUND. According to the confirmation, the funds were disbursed in eight tranches between December 2025 and February 2026 to support students with the payment of their registration fees for the 2025/2026 academic session. The largest tranche, amounting to ₦49,126,900, benefited 980 students, while another ₦39,906,900 was disbursed to 766 students. Other tranches included ₦20,877,150 for 393 students, ₦17,203,150 for 318 students and ₦13,660,500 for 214 students. The Vice-Chancellor, on behalf of the university, students and the wider community, expressed appreciation to NELFUND for the intervention, describing the support as a major contribution to students, their parents and the institution, particularly amid prevailing economic challenges. The university also stated that beneficiary students were issued receipts to promote accountability, transparency and proper documentation of the funds received. Prof. Bunkure further commended NELFUND’s contribution to supporting students, noting that the initiative could have broader social benefits by helping young Nigerians remain engaged in education and reducing the pressures associated with economic hardship. #NELFUNDstudentLoan

For this @NELFUND beneficiary at ABU Zaria, the alert was more than money in her account it meant being able to support her mother, who had just moved into a new home, and help put her sister in school. Her words, “I was so impressed that day. I felt good,” capture the human impact of timely educational support. This is why initiatives like NELFUND matter: when support reaches students from families who need it most, the benefits extend beyond the classroom and ripple through entire households and communities. Kudos to President @officialABAT for championing an initiative that is giving students a helping hand when it matters most.
