The PM is right about the risk to our country of becoming an island of strangers- but itโs not (just) due to immigration. Itโs the rise of social media, decline in community institutions, reduced volunteering, the collapse of pubs, churches and more. Community needs rebuilding

Over the last few years, @BenZaranko and I have written and talked a lot about the NHS productivity problem. In a new @TheIFS comment (with new colleague Olly Harvey-Rich) we look at productivity over the last year.

So, today is the last day of my 12 month secondment to @EKHUFT as CFO.
Itโs been a hugely rewarding year working with NHS leadership teams across the patch who are determined to improve the health of the population of East Kent.

All of these statistics represent real improvements to patients lives and outcomes. None of them would have been possible without the delivery of the highest productivity/efficiency programme in the trustโs history, which has also reduced the deficit at EKHUFT by 25%.
So a lot done, but it is also true that there remains a lot still to do. The EKHUFT team understand that, and their determination, resilience and passion for the population of East Kent will, I know, continue the positive progress made into the future.
- In Feb 2024 55.6% of the patients with cancer began their treatment at EKHUFT within 62 days, in Sept that had increased to 74.7%;
- In Feb 2024 45.1% of patients who arrived at one of our A&Eโs or minor injury units were seen within 4 hours, in Sept that percentage was 56.5%;
This is fantastic news! Itโs going to be moves like this that reform our services and deliver left shift! Well done @wesstreeting and @nhsengland!
Weโre delighted that today Health Secretary @wesstreeting has announced @NHSEngland will take responsibility for GP data in England, paving the way for coded data to be shared with consented cohorts like UK Biobank.
