The National Press Club is honoring José Rubén Zamora — founder of Guatemalan investigative outlet el Periódico and one of Central America's most consequential journalists — with the 2026 John Aubuchon Press Freedom Award.
Arrested in 2022, imprisoned on politically motivated charges, and forced to see his newsroom shut down, Zamora paid an extraordinary price for his journalism. He remains under house arrest today.
José Carlos Zamora will accept the award on his father's behalf at our Fourth Estate Award Gala on November 12 in Washington, D.C.

Austin Tice has been detained for 14 years.
There is much the US Government can do to bring him home, starting with these three things:
1- Allow Debra Tice to meet, in person, confirmed Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton;
2- Connect the Tice family with Israel's Coordinator for the hostages and the missing, Israel's equivalent of the Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs (SPEHA)
3- In the current conversations with Iran, ask what the Iranians know about Austin Tice.
As we mourn the 14 years Austin has lost of his life, we must continue to pressure the US Government to do all they can to bring him home.

I helped work on this idea working at @NPCInstitute part-time last summer and it's so exciting to see it's coming to fruition! Media literacy is more paramount than ever. And what's a better way to bridge that gap than teaching people how to share their stories with journalists?
