A professor posts something that offends powerful people. Does academic freedom protect them if it is outside their area of expertise? Yes. In my new article, I explain why the 1915 AAUP Declaration on Academic Freedom and Tenure covers "distasteful" extramural speech.

If your argument as to why we must “finish the job” against Iran rests on a barracks bombing from 43 years ago, and an Embassy siege from 47 years ago… Holy shit that’s weak.

Walzer gets it backwards (again): Israel’s war on Gaza did not become unjust because of its cruelty; it was unjust from the beginning as a modality of a politically, morally and legally untenable occupation. It has always been wrong to think an unjust war could be waged justly.
Michael Walzer published “Just and Unjust Wars,” an attempt to delineate the rights and wrongs of warfare in both its causes and its conduct, in 1977. In the nearly 50 years since, no other book on the subject has matched its influence. The precepts are not complicated: it is just to defend your country from an invasion and it is unjust to invade a country that has not attacked you—although Walzer does allow for exceptions, mostly for humanitarian causes. It is just to assume certain risks to avoid civilian casualties and it is unjust to bomb towns indiscriminately to compel an enemy to surrender. The justice of going to war—what philosophers call jus ad bellum—is separate from jus in bello, the justice of how a war is fought. The war in Gaza has made Walzer rethink one of the book’s fundamental principles. “The wall between jus ad bellum and jus in bello, which had sustained his theory for almost half a century, was no longer sturdy,” Jordi Graupera writes. As Walzer said to him, “There is a sense in which the carnage of Gaza, the ongoing carnage, simply made the war unjust.” Read about why a philosopher of war is now reconsidering his seminal work: newyorkermag.visitlink.me/T7…

Back in the field harvesting olives this morning at the invitation of Palestinian families (near Beit Jala today) with @rabbijilljacobs @truahrabbis and many other new released-from-detention friends. Our harvest today was peaceful & successful. Sadly, another harvest in Masafer Yatta was not. Settlers attacked Palestinian farmers — but the IDF arrested two of the farmers, and evicted the others from their own land, after declaring it a closed military zone. Sound familiar? It’s happening every single day.

We suspected this was happening during the pandemic, vaccinating under anesthesia. “Close your eyes, we’ll immunize” is adding a potentially dangerous and unnecessary risk to general anesthesia.
I'm a Board Certified anesthesiologist and have been in practice for 24 years. I just learned that the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia where I trained has launched a program to increase flu vaccine uptake among children by vaccinating them while under anesthesia. The program is called "Close your Eyes. We'll Immunize" This is stunningly irresponsible. Here's why: Anesthetists are extremely risk avoidant and endeavor to minimize patient exposure to anything which carries potential side effects. This is particularly true of pediatric patients who very often have never been exposed to anesthetic medications. We simply cannot know how an individual child will respond to these drugs for the first time. Every single medication we administer during an operation can potentially trigger untoward or allergic responses. When this occurs our primary responsibility is to stabilize the patient. Our secondary responsibility is to identify the offending agent. There is absolutely no justification of introducing another agent, in this case a flu vaccine, which carries a risk of harm and contributes nothing to the success of the operation. Some of the more common side effects of flu vaccines are fever (11-16%) and less commonly, a rash (1%). There is also an non-zero risk of severe allergic reactions and high-grade fevers which can develop over the course of minutes. What if a child under anesthesia receives a vaccine and develops a rash and/or fever? Is it from the antibiotic that the surgeon requested? Is it from the narcotic? The anxiolytic? The barbiturate? Anesthetic gases can also (rarely) trigger a life threatening response called Malignant Hyperthermia which commonly presents as a high fever. Without subsequent testing we cannot know which agent was responsible. Most commonly the testing is never done and the child’s record will forever reflect the possibility that some or all of the drugs which were used are responsible for their reaction. This makes future anesthetic care significantly more challenging and will require the use of alternatives which may not be necessary. Advocating for a flu vaccine while a child is anesthetized reflects the pervasive yet inaccurate attitude among the medical establishment that vaccines are perfectly safe. I simply cannot believe that my mentors would have ever supported this initiative when I was a resident there. Close your eyes indeed.

All indications are that U.S. is heading back to war. The next round could be larger and more devastating for Iran but also for the Middle East. It may not be the end of the conflict but the start of a broader unraveling for the region with lasting consequences for the global economy as well. Washington and Israel want to knock out Iran with bigger blows but likelihood of that is low. There will be a lot of devastation before there is an end in sight
Iran says it is preparing to unveil a weapon called the “father of all bombs”, amid reports Trump has ordered plans for strikes on Iran’s energy infrastructure using the “mother of all bombs”, the largest non-nuclear bomb in the US arsenal. LIVE updates: aje.news/r3rtel

Antonín Dvořák famously told Americans that their musical culture would arise not from imitating European models and instead from cultivating its own local traditions, including African American and Native American
I actually do believe American folk music should be taught in schools and every kid should have a repertoire of Appalachian fiddle tunes and Southern blues standards.
