Reshaping the academy. And our professional and academic societies. @womeninnephro @ASNKidney
Having a seat at the table is a good first start... but then, let me choose from the menu and eat at my own pace. Modern academic medicine needs to creatively redefine success for diversity and inclusion-timelines, milestones, metrics. #ILookLikeASurgeon

Hey @AAIMOnline, 60,000 hospitalists are great, but what about the more than 850,000,000 people with #kidney diseases? #WorldKidneyDay is Thursday, March 14. These folks deserve a hearty shout-out as well.

Derek Bok. “Universities in the Marketplace” 2003. A fabulous but alarming read. Yes – at Hartford, CT
This essay basically confirms what it set out to disprove: “American universities have transformed themselves into market-oriented enterprises, barely different from corporations”

Bravo! I am Reed alumni ‘68, Biology. So happy for you. – at Hartford, CT
Tenured. My grandparents were literally share croppers on one side, and on the other, my grandfather was denied promotion for decades because he was black. This is for them.

It seems silly to count. But silliness doesn’t hurt. Missed opportunities do. You must: committee lists, etc. Pay attention! Speakers bureaus, over-representation, continuing to ‘call out’. Yup, still needed. @womeninnephro #womeninSTEM #WomenInMedicine – at Hartford, CT
Replying to @rheault_m
It does get old to call this out all the time. Raising awareness is only one part of the solution. I really want to change this. That's why I'm working with @womeninnephro to set up a speakers bureau for women in nephrology. No more excuses.

true for academics. the science, mentoring, and collaborations, should always be more important than any one person’s career.... now the challenge of changing a culture that incentivizes individual success

What a wonderful definition of mentoring! @BIRCWH @womeninnephro – at Hartford, CT
Lessons from the keynote address at the Annual BIRCWH Meeting. “Your mentors will watch you make safe mistakes that won’t destroy you or your career, and then remind you that they know you” ...and what you are capable of. @DukeSurgery @DukeCancer @BIRCWH

Amazing! My MiL rented an electric typewriter for us. It was used 24-7 for the week by us and friends. The copying was at a parents’ work, the only place one had copy machines. #timeshavechanged – at Wicklow, Ireland

If Nephrology can sustain the energy of the #KidneyWk, there will be an end to the Nephrology lethargy. I have seen collaboration and excitement in the faces of attendees. Let’s keep up driving this cultural change to put our discipline back on top.
