My / dark / mother gathered / empty / cans
while I waited to gather my / white / kid
I waited to gather / white / Jeremiah

High school writers, today is the day!
Here is the prompt for the Twelfth Annual Narrative High School Writing Contest:
It can be change for one character or more; it can be a new awareness that is still raw or unguarded—all that is rich turf for poetry.
Be artful, be original. Be bold!
New this year: students may submit directly to the contest, providing proof of age. The first 1,000 submissions will be accepted for review. The contest will open for submissions on January 6, 2027.

Ola Szczecinska is the twenty-eighth recipient of the Narrative Prize, joining more than two decades of writers, including Natalie Diaz, Ocean Vuong, Javier Zamora, Morgan Talty, and many more.
