When Anglo-Saxon and Frankish kings resumed minting coins to restart their economy, they had no working silver mines or sources, so they melted down precious Byzantine silver works accumulated at their courts to make their first coinage. Isotope values for post-Roman coins in Northwest Europe match Byzantine silver, showing that the first Anglo-Saxon and Frankish coinage were minted from recycled Byzantine silver. "Erratic, gold content offers further confirmation that the silver did not stem from fresh mining but must have been drawn from recycled metal." "The similarity with these Eastern Roman/Byzantine objects is sufficiently close to suggest that Byzantine silver was the dominant source of the silver powering the great seventh-century surge of minting around the North Sea. This has previously been suggested, but the results presented here offer the first physical confirmation of the use of Byzantine silver."

North Koreans are genetically closer to the original Turks. Early Turkic groups like the Göktürks were predominantly Northeast Asian (e.g., Ashina DNA ~98% ANA). Koreans share that broad Northeast Asian ancestry. Modern Turks from Turkey average only ~9-15% Central/East Asian input atop mostly Anatolian/West Eurasian roots.

Being bullied for being too Turkic looking in Turkey.
Kendisine “yabancı” denilmesini kafasına takan bir Türk evladı: - Babam Türk, annem Kıpçak Türk’ü. Neden bana “yabancı” diyorlar? - Gözlerin biraz çekik ya, belki ondandır. - Sadece anneme çekmişim ama ben Türk’üm. - Ne diyeceğiz o zaman? - Ne mutlu Türk’üm diyene!

Apart from everything else, this is indeed an interesting way to describe a Roman soldier of Greek descent and language, who converted to Christianity about 1,600 years before the creation of modern Turkey and about 1,000 years before the arrival of the Ottomans in Asia Minor.
Today we celebrate a Turkish migrant worker who never set foot in England and in 2026 would probably be barred. Happy St George’s Day.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
St George was a Roman soldier of Cappadocian Greek origin born in 3rd-century Anatolia; he was neither Turkish (Turks arrived in the region centuries later) nor a migrant worker. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Geo… britannica.com/biography/Sain…

Shout out to the Ancient Greeks for breathing life into Turkeys tourism industry. Nonody visits Turkey to see anything that isn’t Greek.

Gotta say, did not have "Greece sends warships to defend island from Persian attacks" on my bingo card for this millennium, yet here we are.
