Interesting discussion tonight with People for Education on the latest PISA results. Across OECD countries, reading and math performance have fallen to their lowest levels ever recorded, a challenge stretching well beyond any one province or country. #OntEd #PublicEducation

These stories are unfortunately now the norm. The system is breaking and and the proposed solution will be the privatization of our schools. We cannot recruit ourselves out of a retention crisis.

Among Ontario teachers considering leaving within five years, 35% say the job’s impact on their mental health is a reason. For retirement, it’s 34%. Mental health and retirement are now essentially tied. Ontario cannot recruit its way out of that. #onted

Among Ontario teachers who may leave the profession within five years, nearly one in four cited concerns about safety or security. That rises to 30% among teachers with 6–10 years of experience. This isn’t simply a recruitment problem. It’s a working-conditions problem. #onted

Nearly half of newer Ontario teachers surveyed—45%—either lacked access to the New Teacher Induction Program or weren’t aware of it. We keep talking about recruiting teachers. Are we doing enough to support them once they arrive? #onted

80% of Ontario teachers surveyed said they continue teaching because they love supporting student success. But mental health has now surpassed retirement as a reason some may leave. Teachers haven’t lost their commitment. Our system risks losing committed teachers. #onted

There are two people in this world that you need to make proud of. The eight year old version of you and the eighty year old version of you.

Don't spend money on a therapist, go for a slow walk in the woods. It's best if you take a Grandchild with you. Oh the wonders.

Today I’m at the #ETFO rep council discussing the conditions in public schools with educators. With 6.35 billion in #onted funding CUTS since 2018, classrooms are stretched. A real investment is urgent to make a #BigDifference for students. #SmallerClasses

Bill 60 is more dangerous than people realize. It lets the province move our water systems into corporate structures that can be outsourced, contracted out, and eventually privatized — all without public consent. Ontario’s water must stay PUBLIC. #onpoli #Bill60 #KeepWaterPublic

Ontario cut Grade 7/8 design and tech programs in the late 90s. Now we’re shocked there’s a shortage of tradespeople and tech teachers. Who could have seen that coming? 🙃 #onted #onpoli @otffeo
