🇲🇽☕️This morning I'm getting ready to speak to coffee scholar @JordanBuch_anan about his research on the new generation of high-end coffee shops in Mexico City on the @ModernMexico Podcast. He recently wrote about Gradios-- a pioneering shop in Colonia Centro. Gradios is better than City Market Cafe, the shop in Polanco I visited last week! xitter.cf/NathanielParish/status…
🇲🇽☕️😕A few people told me I should try the espresso at City Market Cafe in Polanco in Mexico City. I wasn’t sure if they were trolling me. I went. It was 1 of the worst espressos I’ve had. Not made well. Over extracted. Too hot. Too smoky / bitter. Not good. 🤷‍♂️

🇲🇽☕️This morning I made an espresso with beans from Chiquitito cafe 👍— a few days ago I stopped by the % Arabica cafe in Mexico City. Very good!
☕️🇲🇽🏆 Is this the best espresso in Colonia Condesa in México City? I stopped by the % Arabica cafe. Very good! I have noticed lately that espressos made with washed beans are consistently good, but a bit boring- thinner texture and muted flavor. Natural process beans can be hit or miss- but open the door to better texture and more complex flavors. #espresso #mexicocity

The U.S. Treasury Department said today that it’s imposing $1.2 billion in fines on Bank of America for allegedly violating anti-money laundering and sanctions laws. In a statement, Treasury said its Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) assessed the $1.2 billion penalty for Bank of America’s “failure to mitigate and report priority national security risks, including Chinese Money Laundering Networks and illicit finance along the southwest border.’'

🇲🇽🇺🇸In spite of all the loud talk from Trump, Mexico's economy continues to enjoy a deeply integrated and protected business relationship with the U.S. "Mexico still holds one of the most favorable positions of any country trading with the United States. Close to 87% of Mexican exports enter duty-free, and the effective tariff they meet averages about 3.4%, against 21.7% for China, 10.9% for Brazil and 9.1% for India. The trade has shifted too from cars toward electronics, so that computer equipment has now passed vehicles as Mexico’s largest single export north. Much of it is server and data-center hardware, where Mexico now supplies about a quarter of all U.S. imports of AI-related goods, matching Taiwan and far outstripping China," a new article in @AmerQuarterly explains.

🇲🇽🏍️fun fact: Mexico’s motorcycle fleet increased by 4x+ in the decade leading up to 2025, from 2.6m to 10.5m. The Economist reports, "In Mexico an industry group estimates that seven in ten motorcycles sold in 2023 were bought for work, including for deliveries and for use as motorcycle taxis."

🇺🇸🇲🇽Donald Trump has insisted on more deals and tie-ups between Mexican & ‌US energy companies in a call with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, the @FT reported . 🇲🇽🤖📈"The momentum is real; the Inter-American Development Bank reported last year that Latin America is already experiencing 'a significant boom in data center investment.' And as global demand for data continues to grow about 20% annually, countries across the region are emerging as attractive tech hubs. To be sure, cutting ribbons at new data centers will make for great photo-ops in the coming years, and will bring in important revenue. But without robust public programs to prepare both workforces and local businesses, this won’t do much to secure Latin America’s future," @oppenheimera explains.
Latin America is racing to become the next data-center powerhouse. Brazil, Mexico, Chile, and Argentina are leading the way, attracting billions in investment. But will data centers actually transform the region’s economies—or simply become another extractive industry? Andrés Oppenheimer argues that the real race is for something else: talent, education, and AI adoption. 🇲🇽☕️Getting the chance to chat with this charismatic caballero was one of the highlights of my week last week. He said he was born in 1940 and moved to Mexico City when he was 14. He worked delivering soda, carrying crates. He said that's why he's still strong in his 80s now.
🇲🇽☕️👍This was so fun. I’ve been trying to find the best espresso in Mexico City. I stopped by Cafe Bella in Colonia Centro. Their machine is from 1954. One of the patrons bragged that he is even older but still going strong! #mexicocity #espresso

Flying back to DC, still savoring yesterday’s win. My testimony dove deeply into the numbers showing that Big Bend is *not* an area of high illegal entry. The transcript will show me saying, “OK this is going to get really nerdy.” And yeah, it was. From marfapublicradio.org/news/20…
