It’s not “us versus them.” It’s us versus our ability to see them as us.

water is transparent only within a very narrow band of the electromagnetic spectrum, so living organisms evolved sensitivity to that band, and that's what we now call "visible light".

My wife grew up on the metric system, and she says the mile is the most ridiculous unit ever invented. For years, she had me. But history claps back.... The word comes from Latin, mille passus, a thousand paces. A Roman pace was two steps, counted each time the same foot hit the ground. A thousand of those made a mile. Along the Appian Way, built in 312 BC, stone markers stood at every thousand paces, counted outward from a gate in Rome's old wall. A traveler read the distance off the road itself. The strange number came much later. In 1593, Parliament under Elizabeth I set the mile at 5,280 feet so it would divide evenly into furlongs, the length of an English farmer's furrow. So the odd number is a Roman soldier's stride, adjusted to fit an English field. I love that. Every time you say "mile," you are still counting the steps of a legionary marching south out of Rome..... ...on the Appian Way that you can still walk today, counting the old mile markers as you go The poet Statius called that road the queen of long roads.

Imagine being given somewhere around 80 years on a planet floating through an incomprehensibly enormous universe, surrounded by billions of people you will never meet, mysteries you will never solve, places you will never see, and more knowledge than you could absorb in a thousand lifetimes... and spending the whole damn thing worrying about money, arguing with strangers, impressing people you don't even like, and doing something you hate five days a week because somebody convinced you that was life. I don't know, man. I think we may have gotten a few things terribly wrong.

AI isn’t going away. Barring unprecedented global government coordination, it isn’t even slowing down. The only real decision is whether to centralize power, or disperse it. Do you fear the technology? Or a small number of people controlling the technology?

The soy sauce packet in your takeout bag isn't soy sauce. The biggest maker, Kari-Out in New Jersey, lists water, salt, hydrolyzed soy and corn protein, caramel color and sodium benzoate. No fermentation, no brewing. It's made in a couple of days by boiling defatted soy meal in hydrochloric acid, neutralizing it, then adding color and corn syrup so it looks and tastes close enough. A lot of the bottles on the grocery shelf are the same thing. Kikkoman and the Japanese government went to the UN food standards body years ago and asked that the chemical version not be allowed to use the name soy sauce. The hydrolyzed protein industry and the USDA pushed back and it stayed. The brewed ones say naturally brewed on the label. If the bottle doesn't say it, it isn't.

I sailed to Hawaii, with one other person on an Islander 44 sailboat when I was 18 years old. One night, (we were about 1700 miles from California), there was no moon and no clouds, and we turned off the lights in the boat. No other boats or land was around. The Milky Way was above us, but because there was no light pollution over the ocean, it was a pure, creamy white carpet of sparkling stars; you could not see any darkness within it--it was so spectacular, so beautiful, and so close that it took my breath away. I felt drenched in the utter abundance of the Milky Way. At the same time, there was a meteor shower to our starboard side. We had a 360-degree view of the black ocean around us, so we saw thousands of falling meteors, like golden rain, shooting into the sea for hours. Also, we noticed that we were sailing through phosphorescence and that the wake of the boat and the sides of the boat were all lit up in glowing light. We sailed through this phosphorescence for hours. And then, something I did not even know existed: flying fish, lifting out of the phosphorescence, all lit up themselves, and flew over our boat, and alongside our boat, dripping sparkling light as they flew over us. This went on the whole night... This universe does everything it can to surprise and delight us! YUM! Thank you, universe, for this exquisite light show! Thank you for the opportunity to see something so beautiful, so powerful, and so unique! I love you! This was not our boat, but it is an Islander 44.
