Capaia was once one of Cape wine’s most exciting new estates: big money, aristocratic owners, famous winemakers and grand ambitions. Now it’s going under the hammer for less than R50m. What went wrong? Tim James investigates the costly dream that turned sour: winemag.co.za/wine/opinion/t…

After nearly 200 years, one of South Africa’s quietest heritage stories is ending. Strassbergers in Clanwilliam - the original veldskoen factory, founded in 1834 in Wupperthal and later moved to Clanwilliam - is closing its doors at the end of September. This was never a mall brand. It was a fifth-generation family business. Shoes still made mostly by hand. 28 to 32 people touching a single pair. Workers whose parents and grandparents sat at the same benches. Its legacy is the original stitch-down veldskoen: tough enough for the Cederberg, comfortable enough for everyday South African life, and made with a kind of patience that modern factories no longer bother with. They went into business rescue. Cheap competition, rising costs, and a handmade model that doesn’t scale easily finally caught up with them. If you own a pair of Strassies, wear them with extra care. They carried farmers, hikers, and ordinary South Africans for generations. A small town just lost more than a factory. It lost a craft. #Clanwilliam #Veldskoen #MadeInSA

I see that City of Cape Town wants to introduce mandatory municipal permits and fees for domestic pets, property-based animal limits, restrictions on backyard food production, and WARRANTLESS entry powers for municipal law enforcement. The government will PAY YOU grants for fatherless children, but don't you DARE have a dog! The draft reportedly requires a person keeping a dog or cat older than six months to apply for a municipal permit for that individual animal. You'll probably have to pay for this and don't be surprised if they want you to renew that license every year too. Why does an ordinary person with a sterilised, vaccinated, well-behaved dog need a municipal permit for that animal? 🚨Here's the kicker: SEARCH AND ENTRY POWERS The draft gives authorised officials powers to search premises, vehicles and structures and seize animals/equipment, with circumstances in which a search can apparently take place WITHOUT a warrant. Yeap. They can just walk in. Now I don't have to tell you what happens when a city official just walks onto private property in an attempt to just "remove" what many consider to be a member of a family because you didn't pay your annual renewal fee. These people are losing their minds and you're losing your freedoms. Go have your say: dearsouthafrica.co.za/coct-a…

An apt day to remember that Dolly Parton once recorded a cover of Stairway to Heaven - and, in defiance of every moral law in the universe, she absolutely owned it.

Thank you for the reminder of me wanting to also print my own pics I have taken in nature. Proteas are just too beautiful, I took this in Greyton while filming with @AfricanTrvlCrew youtu.be/jQHhs-K93fA?si=stIn… #IAMCAPETOWN #greyton #lovewesterncape #shotleft
Good taste shouldn’t stop at the table. 🌿 A striking protea print can bring warmth, colour & a distinctly South African touch to a dining space - whether at home, in a guesthouse or holiday rental. Explore Cape Fynbos Co: capefynbosco.etsy.com #ProteaArt #SouthAfricanDesign

Check out the Karoo. I arrived in Prince Albert last night, crossing the Dwyka River bridge just before they shut the road. Alt route from the N1 is currently via Beaufort West.

***Warning: Theft*** ***Don't camp at Cape Columbine Nature Reserve*** “Last night we stayed at one of the most beautiful camp sites in Paternoster. But while we were sleeping in the rooftop tent some arseholes broke into the bakkie and cleaned us out. Literally robbed us blind while we slept above them. 2 macbooks, dji drone, gymbal and mics, flexible solar panel, brand new Gentech inverter, British passport, my whole bag of clothes, Lisa's bag of toiletries, makeup and her suitcase. We searched the area and recovered our @cadacsa gas geyser. We spend our money supporting these campspots and supporting local businesses in the area, and yet even though Vredenburg Police Station told us this is a regular occurrence, Cape Columbine Nature Reserve don't warn people of the dangers and don't have adequate security on site. This is a warning to our fellow travelers. Be aware and know the facts before camping here. Now we're off to buy toothbrushes and a jacket.”

Water is reaching Sossusvlei. 🌊 Warden Erastus confirms the pan is currently unreachable — the river has cut off access and it won't be passable for hours. A rare and extraordinary sight in the Namib. 09.04.2026 #Sossusvlei #Namibia
