Israel killed the last remaining orthopedic surgeon in Northern Gaza today.
Dr. Saeed Joudeh was on his way to the hospital when Israel shot him in the head.
He was not a combatant. He was a doctor devoted to saving lives.

Goodhart's Law: “When a measure becomes a target, it ceases to be a good measure.” A famous historical example is the "cobra effect": in India during British rule, the government, concerned about the number of venomous cobras, offered a bounty for every dead cobra. Initially, this was successful. Then people started breeding cobras for the income. The reward programme was scrapped so the breeders set their snakes free & increased the cobra numbers.
Two strategies to "cobra-proof" our goals & metrics:
1) Define metrics clearly in ways that reduce the potential for them to be misinterpreted or gamed
2) Use a diverse set of metrics collectively to measure the “true goal”

So when will it be prioritised?

This week I taught #globalhealth Masters Students @GlobHealth_BSMS about healthcare as a weapon and wound in war -- as relevant now as ever
.@WHO and partners have lost contact with health personnel at Al-Shifa hospital in northern #Gaza since the ongoing raid began, and we are seeking information on the patients’ condition and if they are receiving needed care.
Accessing Al-Shifa is now impossible, and there are reports of health workers being arrested and detained.
A planned mission to Al-Shifa today had to be cancelled due to lack of security.
The ongoing situation could impact the hospital’s ability to function, even minimally, and deprive people of critical, lifesaving care.
We repeat once again: hospitals are not battlegrounds. They must be protected in line with international humanitarian law.

Homelessness is rising in the UK and hospital attendances by people experiencing homelessness are increasing correspondingly.
Yet medical education currently leaves junior doctors underprepared to care for this group of people, writes @LydiaShackshaft
