I can entirely believe this. have watched entire teams of very smart and highly educated people get outclassed by one person with some local street smarts and a good vibe check
Heard an incredible story about Stripe's expansion in Romania
Wanted to build out a 20-person fraud detection team to be closer to the "source"
Rented a whole floor, posted senior engineer positions with €1,200/month salary
Then they interviewed the guy named Marius
"What's your experience with unauthorized transactions?" Stripe HR asked
"I once moved three BMWs from Munich to Constantia in 24h, without technically owning them"
Hired on the spot
By lunch, he'd identified a card theft ring Stripe had been tracking for months
"Those transactions from Germany? That must be Misha crew, they drive there every second Tuesday"
Turns out Marius catches more fraud in a day than Stripe's entire SF team did in a month
Stripe saves on office expenses too as Marius works remotely from his uncle's betting shop in Timisoara
Silicon Valley just discovered what we've always known
One Romanian is worth twenty Stanford engineers
Another incredible win for Europe
always bet on @nyarth to play the long game on anime screencap posting 🫡
reminded of the bit we had going in the UK rhythm game scene of people getting their debit cards stuck in the slotted e-amusement card readers

the entire concept of video game consoles as toys was pushed by nintendo as a way to market the NES as something else other than a computer of any kind after the failure of atari and the video game crash in the US
we europeans never had that problems tho cause we were gaming on home computers from the getgo and playing stuff cooked by british teenagers in their bedrooms which was the chad move all along
on the settlement side, aside from running an exchange with practically every currency in the world, the networks do things like hold collateral worth X days of processing so that if one of the parties goes out of business, people still get paid after the plug is pulled
these comments are such nerdsnipes to me
visa and mastercard's ‘true value’ is that they balance the interests of the merchants/acquirers and the interests of the issuers/cardholders
they write rules, run a truly massive clearing and settlement system, and mediate disputes
