Creating new clean water ponds supports freshwater plants and animals, but good practice and long-term management are required to ensure healthy and successful ponds.

🌱 We are working with Nattergal at Boothby Wildland in Lincolnshire to compensate for habitat lost through Network Rail development.
In 2023, we created a new pond complex for great crested newts to breed in: freshwaterhabitats.b-cdn.net…

🔬 We're using Environmental DNA to monitor great crested newts in our new and restored ponds. By analysing water samples for their DNA, we can find out if they have been present.

We talk a lot about creating ponds for great crested newts, but how do we choose where to put them?
💧 We carefully choose sites where ponds have a clean water source and are near to an existing newt population to maximise success.

🦎 Great crested newts are the largest of the UK's native newts. They're dark brown or black with a bright orange belly. In spring, males develop a jagged crest along their back and a white flash along the tail.

For the past six years, we've been busy creating and restoring ponds to boost populations of great crested newts. Each year, we monitor our progress and we're excited to share our 2024 results, which show our efforts are paying off for freshwater wildlife.
