SIR PATRICK STEWART (1940-2026)
Before everything else, Patrick was defined by being born and bred in Yorkshire, the proud county in the north of England which he loved to the end. You could hear it in his accented voice and in the stern honesty with which he told you what he thought and felt. Yorkshiremen have no truck with half-truths or avoidance of big issues. He wore his heart on his sleeve, which made him a man to rely on, to admire and in my case, love.
We first met as ambitious young actors with the Royal Shakespeare Company half a century ago but we weren’t in the same productions. My first strong memory was a few years later, meeting him in the street in central London when he told me about an offer to take over a leading part in 'Star Trek'. “But Patrick think of your stage career in the UK. Do you really want to risk—getting lost in Hollywood for years and years?”. Well, he took the risk and thank goodness for us all that he did for not just his devoted Trekkies but film and theatre audiences, who marvelled at his using international celebrity to star in a string of cinema successes ('X-Men' of course) and in great classical plays by Shakespeare, Ibsen, Arthur Miller, Peter Shaffer, Pinter and Beckett at Stratford-upon-Avon, in London’s West End and on Broadway.
America was his adopted home, where he met his adored Sunny who has cared for him through sickness and health, through thick and thin. But he never forsook his origins: and the proudest achievement of the most respected and beloved actor of his generation on either side of the Atlantic, was his appointment as Chancellor of Huddersfield University in Yorkshire.
His farewell performance in 'Avengers: Doomsday' is yet to be seen.

The OBR now expects growth of just 1% next year, a third lower than it forecast in March.
Labour keeps piling costs onto the firms that hire and invest, then acts surprised when growth stalls 🤷🏼♂️

Budget: Labour promised change:
📈 Record tax: 37.9% of GDP next year, rising to 38.6%
📈 Higher debt/borrowing every year of the forecast
📈 £57.7bn more on working age welfare
📉 No funding for 3% on defence
John Healey said < 3% makes us less safe. Where is the money?

Is that it?
John Healey had a big job to do cleaning up Labour’s mess. This Budget fails to do it.
Britain is overspent, overborrowed and overtaxed. This Budget does not come close to meeting the moment.

NEW: Doncaster Council has spent just under £29m on reopening Doncaster Sheffield Airport since March 2024, Mayor Ros Jones has said
The reopening was from SYMCA grants and previously approved CDC funds totalling £30m
Nearly did 'run out of money' 😬

I wonder if the coordinated waving of order papers by Labour MPs after the most boring budget speech I’ve sat through looked as daft on the TV as it did in the chamber.

If John Healey thinks his new high street bank tax hike is only going to hit jobs in London, he is wrong.
Financial services employ 2.48million people across the country, most of them (TWO THIRDS) work outside London.

🚨 BUDGET BINGO!
Another council tax rise? ✅
More responsibilities, no extra funding? ✅
Blaming the Conservatives? ✅
Yet another taskforce? ✅
Will councils finally get the funding and freedoms they need to deliver for residents, or just more demands from Whitehall and another bill for local taxpayers?
How many will you tick off? 👀

When John Healey stands up today and tells us he will be taxing the banks just remember.
It won't be the banks that pay. It will be you.

Interesting thread on Churchill's big, bold offer to bring the Liberal leader into his Cabinet in 1951.
The Liberals' refusal paved the way for Florence Horsburgh to become Minister of Education, and subsequently the first Conservative woman Cabinet minister.

Labour-led Hackney Council filed a 128 page application to itself, to request that a single meeting room be converted into a one-bed flat.
The application was sent back for MORE work.
This kind of thing happens all the time. It's completely ridiculous.

Last week, campaigning with Conservatives, we encountered 15 or so Reform activists. One repeatedly called Kemi “not British”, “Nigerian” and an “anchor baby”. I found these views disgusting and called them out. Not one Reform activist challenged him. Reform’s problems run deep.
‘Is calling Kemi Badenoch a “Nigerian scammer” racist, yes or no?’
‘…I’m not on your show to talk about what a journalist has tweeted.’
Reform's Robert Jenrick refuses to engage with @Lewis_Goodall's question about Raheem Kassam's comments on the Tory leader.

Disappointingly the Labour government has taken away most Planning powers from councillors. They've got this completely the wrong way round, but well done to our @Conservatives RBKC team for creating a Members Reference Meeting to ensure that residents' voices are still heard.
