NEW: Nick Saban sounds off on the 24-team College Football Playoff:
"It’s too many. There’s not 24 teams in the country that can win a National Championship. So, what is the reason to actually do it? It’s about the money."
He added: "If we just put the right 12 teams in and didn’t go through all the political BS that we went through so we can have a 12-team Playoff, and end up putting a couple of teams in that shouldn’t be in, and some teams that didn’t get in should have gotten in. That was a good tournament."

Which games?
Not Miami-ND (no longer an elimination game for ND), Oregon-Ohio State (no longer elimination game for either), LSU-Bama (both safe) or Utah-BYU (both safe).
I suppose 5-3 Florida vs. 4-4 Oklahoma, though.
NEW: Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti says "more games are going to matter" with the 24-team College Football Playoff:
"The way this format works is it’s got all different kinds of incentives, right? You’re going to fight like crazy to be inside the top 24, and then you want to get a home game, so you’re going to fight like crazy to be inside 16, and then you want to be inside eight, so you get a home game and a bye. So you're always playing for something."

A 24-team College Football Playoff could put the future of bowl games in jeopardy.
Bowl games have been a college football staple for more than a century, but an expanded CFP, NIL, and the transfer portal have changed the postseason landscape.
NEW: Wake Forest and Jake Dickert are 6-1, and he tells @PeteNakos that financial limitations are no excuse:
"The new revenue share has given all coaches excuses. And if it doesn’t work, (you hear), ‘It’s not me. It’s not something I did. It’s not my —’ I just don’t believe them. I don’t believe in that. We know what we have. We’ve got to leverage every cent and resource that we possibly can, and there’s going to be a tremendous amount of sacrifice by everybody. Period."

Here is (part) of Central Michigan head coach Matt Drinkall's quote in opposition to the proposed 24-team College Football Playoff:

Just got off the weekly press conference with Central Michigan head coach Matt Drinkall. We asked him about the proposed 24-team Playoff, and now we have about 10 minutes of quotes to transcribe.
Hope to be able to share that soon.

Big thanks to @NickCarparelli, of Bowl Season, for spending time with @SyracuseU @SUFalkCollege students in technology and sport sponsorship & promotion classes today. Nick shared valuable insight and real-world perspective on the evolving college football landscape.
BRING BACK THE OLD BIG EAST:
West Virginia: Passionate fan base that is willing to invest to win. Unhappy with lack of regional rivals in B12. Basketball will also benefit from Big East.
Pitt: Belongs with West Virginia, ACC is dying, get out while you can.
Cincinnati: Has not won anything since joining Big 12, basketball has struggled mightily.
UCF: Same reasons as Cincy, lets get the Florida market involved here
USF: More Florida, rival for UCF. Investing at a level to be P4 competitive.
UConn: Football chomping at the bit to move up, already investing at an ACC level, beat ACC champion Duke in 2025.
Syracuse: Another school that has struggled mightily in football and basketball and the ACC has just not worked out.
Virginia Tech: With James Franklin this football program can be top 20, could be a power in the Big East
Rutgers: Belongs in Big East, not nearly competitive enough in the B10 in either major sport
Boston College: Belong here regionally, has had little success in football/basketball.
If you need more members: Temple, Miami Ohio, James Madison, Toledo, Liberty.
MAKE IT HAPPEN

They’ll be no more remarkable performance in college football today than the one put forth by Yale QB Dante Reno. One day after his father passed away, he played for Yale and threw four touchdown passes and for 298 yards. Yale beat Merrimack 41-24. Bravo.

Minnesota's head coach just launched himself into a mob of his own players at full sprint. P.J. Fleck crowd-surfs after every win, today's was his 100th, and the mania took 15 years to build. It started with the worst thing that can happen to a person.
In February 2011, Fleck's infant son Colt died of a heart condition. Fleck was a 30-year-old receivers coach at the time. He came up with a phrase to get himself out of bed. Row the boat. Your back faces the future, you can't see what's coming, all you control is the oar.
Two years later Western Michigan made him the youngest head coach in the FBS. He went 1-11 his first season and people laughed at the boat stuff. By 2016 the same program went 13-0 and made the Cotton Bowl.
When Minnesota hired him away in 2017, there was a catch. Western Michigan had trademarked "Row the Boat." The school owned the legal rights to the phrase he created for his son. Fleck paid them $50,000 out of his own pocket, structured as a scholarship for a walk-on player, to take the words with him.
Nine years of rowing later, today happened. Minnesota beat #24 Michigan 20-14, took back the Little Brown Jug for the first time since 2014, and beat them at home for the first time in 49 years. 51,012 fans stormed the field.
So yes, the man flies into that pile looking slightly unhinged. He knows better than anyone in that locker room that you don't get to choose which days are the good ones. You just keep rowing until one shows up.

We used to be able to celebrate and be excited about making a bowl.
40-50 teams used to end the year feeling good about their seasons or at least OK.
The postseason being this small leads to this.
Nick Carparelli retweeted
A few reasons why this is happening
1. Thanks in large part to ESPN everyone has decided that success can only be found in the playoff
2. The ability to flip rosters has eroded the idea of patience in program building
3. “Indiana did it why cant we?” Is a fallacy that too many people think is truth

Once your team is eliminated from the 12-team CFP discussion, people first get angry, then eventually apathetic.
When the end goal was reaching a high-level bowl game or winning a conference title, it didn’t get this way this early.
Case for 24:

Sunday Thoughts: It feels like half of CFB is having an existential crisis.
So many people want to fire their coach, even some with a good record and some with a new coach. Feels like we're in an unhealthy cycle and a weird place. Almost nobody can sustain anything.

Dear SEC presidents: You're about to ruin college football for a 24-team CFP payday.

Everything about this 24-team playoff is so dumb.
Let’s replace the two best teams in the SEC, B1G, ACC and Big 12 playing each other for a championship — for eight mid teams playing each other in the “first round” of the CFP.
Brilliant.

Someone is going to have to explain to me how a December 10 game between 8-4 Iowa and 9-3 Virginia is going to be worth a ton more TV money because you slap a CFP logo on it. We already know the value of this game because it’s essentially a Pop Tarts Bowl
The conversations between ESPN and its conference partners have been tough sledding, sources have told @SBJ. Trying to replace the revenue generated by an event like the SEC Championship (around $100 million) is no easy ask.

👎🏼👎🏼👎🏼👎🏼👎🏼
CFP leaders are closer than ever to expanding to a 24-team playoff. They are talking buyouts of conference title games and scheduling logistics of doubling the field.
Foregone conclusion?
“If we can get a decent (TV) deal, we are definitely going to 24.”

Don’t worry they’re about to implement a great way to fix this:
Double the size of the Playoff so the early-season games have lower stakes.
