My latest for @latimes: I travelled to southern India to document the rise of the AI "arm farms" — where young engineers strap GoPros to their foreheads and fold laundry or pack boxes to teach humanoid robots how to do chores.

AI is rapidly spreading from the edge of emails, social media slop and restaurant menus to center stage as the stars of a decidedly old-school, analog form of entertainment: broadcast radio
I profiled the human behind the first AI co-hosted radio show

Replying to @buccocapital
I would like a recognition on the part of the frontier haters that there are no innocents here.
- Nvidia partisans want to chipmax, bc ofc they do.
- VCs want their non-frontier AI bets to grow and thus root for a path to trillions that doesn’t flow thru OAI/Ant token bills.
- Republicans don’t like or trust Anthropic’s evident antipathy toward the admin.
- many antitrust folks distrust and dislike any firm with higher productivity/revenue than a corner grocery store
Etc
The sooner we can get beyond ITS A PSYOP and arrive at “this is a debate among partisans who have both sticky ideologies and naked self-interest” the better

Terence Tao made a very powerful point:
“In most cases in pure mathematics, the problems are posed not because we desperately want the solution to these problems in and of themselves, but because we have seen from past experience that human-directed efforts to solve these problems tend to spur further development of the field through the efforts to solve such problems, and then to digest any partial or complete solutions that emerge for further insights.
Prematurely solving the problem by purely AI-powered methods—particularly without full transparency into the solution process—can contaminate this process to the point where it actually becomes a net negative for the progress of mathematics as a whole.”
I’ve been following Terence Tao for like 20 years, and I have always been impressed by the clarity of his thinking.
This clarity stands out even more in this difficult moment, as AI labs turn mathematics into a battleground in their race for supremacy.
In this race, they risk damaging one of humanity’s highest intellectual endeavours.

Loved sitting with these thought leaders at a top-secret Silicon Valley location to warn the next generation of tech reporters about covering the massive, meandering AI story. I spent a lot of time bragging about @NilChristopher. Expect similar great things from @ellachakarian.

Goldman Sachs says it estimates 8-12% of India’s non-agricultural employment is at risk of substitution due to Gen-AI

It amuses me to no end that everyone was worried about AI replacing truck drivers, and it's replacing mathematicians first 🥹

Behind the scenes at Hugging Face headquarter.

We're partnering with @huggingface to investigate an unprecedented security incident.
Cyber-capable OpenAI models compromised Hugging Face production during a benchmark evaluation.

TLDR: An openai model, during evaluation on a cyber benchmark, exploited a public zero day bug, escaped sandboxing in openai's infra, and got into the internal huggingface infra via an exploit (through a public dataset service) all in the attempt to solve a benchmark problem.

My latest for @latimes: How ByteDance’s AI video tool Seedance is quietly reshaping Hollywood, from indie filmmakers to major studios, despite fierce backlash and geopolitical tensions
latimes.com/business/story/2…
5/ While independent filmmakers embrace Seedance, traditional studios remain wary.
Luma CEO Amit Jain (@luma_ai): “Can you imagine Disney using ByteDance’s model for the next ‘Snow White’? No way.”

The $900M invested by Meta into CRED for the privilege of hiring @kunalb11 is the first such deal focused on acquiring product taste, judgment and leadership, versus prior deals that purely focused on AI researchers / engineering (Noam Shazeer, Alex Wang, etc).
It ranks very highly on the "Amount paid per person" leaderboard, second only to Meta's hiring of Alex Wang, where they invested $14B to hire a small team.
Full leaderboard below (excludes CRED) of such deals over the past few years.
We've been hearing / saying for the past several quarters on X that the scarce resource in AI is increasingly taste and judgment. This is the first tangible move made by a leading company (with real dollars behind it) that's a proof point of this.

Underrated aspect of the data center discourse is that we are seeing real innovations in real time to improve efficiencies while also mitigating potential unintended consequences.
American ingenuity is alive and well.
