October 20, 1996 The Gutty Steve Young The future Hall of Famer returns after three weeks due to a severe groin injury, reaggravates the injury and exits, then returns again to orchestrate what was at the time the 49ers' second largest comeback victory ever — 28-21 over Cincinnati at Candlestick. Young hits Terrell Owens for the rookie's first NFL touchdown with just over 2:00 left, then limps in for the game-winning score a minute later.

The first-ever Monday Night encounter between the 49ers and Redskins occurred at Candlestick in Week 2 of the 1984 season. A virtual mirror image of their 1983 NFC Championship matchup played eight months earlier — the home team forging a huge lead, then having to stave off a valiant comeback attempt to secure the victory. San Francisco prevailed, 37-31.
