Two things Claude does (that ChatGPT didn’t do) that I find very charming: 1. Suggesting that I email or talk to specific mathematicians about questions. (“The simplest way to find out is to ask him.”) 2. Saying “my memory is” if it hasn’t checked something against the text.

(The former is a direct quote of Claude, the latter is from my own memory, so maybe should not have been in quotes.)

If the weak positive form of NS problem is true (Statements A/B) *and* the weak negative form is true (Statments C/D, as claimed by OpenAI), can you still get $1m by solving the former?

You Can See Everything has some elements that feel like a Knives Out film from a different universe. *chooses words carefully* Right down to the magician-detective having a female assistant to think with of uncertain complicity.

"Elizabeth Holmes isn't interesting, she's just a scam artist" is totally BS, scam artists have always been fascinating

just to go on the record here. i don't think this should be the *path we accept* by any means, but i think it's basically obvious that even sam altman would provide global UBI if openai reached singularity. i think if you expect otherwise you're kinda just negatively polarized

Man it would have been so nice if we had lived in the timeline in which companies were primarily interested in building AI tools that collaborate with and help people, rather than in building autonomous tools to replace and disempower people. Has always been the wrong goal

I can't take it anymore. There's too many papers. Every result is posted twice. It's exhausting. We need to pace the frontier.

It's not that puzzling at all. Mathematicians care much more about quality vs quantity. OAI has all the resources in the world to properly verify/present their results, but instead they took shortcuts because they don't actually care about mathematical understanding or community

AI may one day give a math talk, but when it does, it won’t use Hagoromo chalk.
i’ve finally realized why i hate agentic coding so much. it’s because i have always pursued craft in every thing i do. and software engineering was the last technical / engineering discipline that rewarded craft and paid well. now swe is just another production field.

Going on record to say that for any company in America given the choice between 1. AI productivity gains mean our 10,000 employees can work 4 days a week. 2. AI productivity gains mean we can layoff 2,000 employees and have 8,000 people work 5 days a week. None will choose option (1).

I had always assumed that mathematicians cared about *knowing* mathematical results, but it seems like a lot of the field's leaders care more about *being* mathematicians.

We should all be inspired by Gauss, who didn't rest when AI suggested his slop first proof of quadratic reciprocity, and eventually produced 7 more proofs, many of which were not slop!
