How do you teach the long hop? Finish your throwing program with the hat drill. Gives a specific target where to land the ball as well as giving the feel for the guy catching the hop how much easier the long hop is to handle.

Outfielders: Long Hop or No Hop. -Know your arm. -Generally anything more than 120 feet, long hop is the way to go. -Easier tag for your infielder and you don’t lose any time. -10 to 15 feet in front of bag on a long hop.
