Auburn claimed 7 new National Championships last year. A reader tracked down the origin of their new 1958 claim: an unorthodox system that added up all votes in the AP Poll over the entire season.

TIL Auburn's 1958 "National Championship" was claimed because they (checks notes) "had a higher average AP Ranking throughout the course of the season" than LSU.

There was a 138-team Playoff before, by the way. It was just called the regular season.

Gruff Sparty, Wolverbear and hundreds of vintage college mascots were created by Arthur Evans of the Angelus Pacific decal company. They were often sold to campus bookstores without official university involvement. Gruff Sparty appeared in East Lansing dating back to 1950.
Despite Gruff Sparty's popularity, one thing has remained unclear: Where did he come from? First appearing on campus in the 1950s, ousted in the 1970s and officially trademarked in the 1980s, Gruff has a history filled with mystery.

you would not believe what game was “meaningless” to this Baylor fan

Meaningless bowl game vs a game vs a rival that could have gotten you in the actual playoffs?

Found a topical paragraph in the autobiography of Michigan’s Bo Schembechler. Could you imagine a world where beating your rival for a conference title & a meaningless bowl bid is more exciting than the national championship? Oh the horror.

Conocías esto? En 1979, el arquitecto Pedro Ramírez Vázquez, creador del Azteca, propuso este diseño helicoidal de auditorio. Totalmente novedoso y visualmente. Espectacular. No llegó a concretarse obviamente.

There's a new piece of hardware making its way into the WSU–OSU rivalry... and this one has quite the story. 👀🪨 WSU and Oregon State have been playing football since 1903, and now there's a new trophy on the line!

Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, Oct 6, 1959 - Down 3-1 in games in 1959 World Series against Dodgers, the White Sox have a 1-0 lead in 7th inning and they would hold on to see another day as a record crowd of 92,706 went home disappointed. Two days later LA would take the series
