AI models will soon be the world's best hardware designers. But there is a *lot* more to hardware engineering than just design. Here's my take on what I see as the next frontier: improving the lossy interface between the digital and physical worlds.

More than any time in my career, VCs seem to be underwriting other investors’ interest rather than the company itself.

The strange thing about VCs investing in competitors is how normal they pretend it is. When a VC takes a board seat, they aren't merely making an investment. They become a fiduciary. They gain access to the company's strategy, performance, weaknesses, and plans. And they accept a duty to put the company's interests ahead of their own. Then their firm invests in a competitor. We're supposed to believe the conflict disappears because everyone involved is professional. But how many firms actually prevent partners from seeing how competing companies are marked? How many require them to recuse themselves from portfolio reviews? How many have real information barriers, rather than assurances that no one will misuse what they know? A conflict doesn’t have to produce obvious misconduct to be a conflict. Simply knowing that one company is accelerating while another is struggling influences where a firm puts its attention, capital, recruiting help, and introductions. The board member’s job is to bet on the company. If their firm needs to bet on its competitor too, perhaps they shouldn’t have taken the board seat. (A sidenote: I’m not talking about situations where a portfolio company pivots and begins competing with another company in the portfolio. I’m talking about knowingly investing in competitors. And yes, founders sometimes claim that every company in their broad space is a competitor, when very often it isn’t.)

I once ordered t-shirts for our (7 person) team but my manager balked at spending Microsoft's money that way and I paid out of pocket.
Sam Altman @sama just ordered 7 ultra-rare custom Swiss watches from Vanguart, fully branded with the OpenAI logo on the dial. One for him, six for his inner circle. Inscribed on the back of each watch is ‘if AGI.aligned: deploy()’ which was written in the programming language Python.VANGUART This is starting to be a trend in the tech world and I’m all for it — If your company wants customer branded Rolex or other watches shoot me a dm we specialize in bulk corporate orders with custom engraving and dial branding

A couple weeks ago, one of my smartest friends said he was heading to China for a while to get a Fingerspitzengefühl for their energy, AI, and hardware ecosystems. He asked if I'd want him to write up his field notes for not boring as he went deeper and deeper, from a wide-eyed tourist to factory tours to conversations with leaders of China's biggest tech companies (in his first 11 days, as it turns out). I said of course, and this is the first installment. An American Engineer in China Field Notes #1: The First 11 Days Including: - Bambu's 3D printed gun display - Getting into the right WhatsApp groups - Somewhat odd Shenzhen art district murals - Knockoff Yankees caps - Integration aspirations - And why you don't see a lot of helicopters in China. More to come.

National Aviation Day is a reminder of how far aviation has come and how much further it can go. For the past 100 years, aviation also has been built around pilots. Its next 100 years will be built around autonomy. We believe Merlin is building that future.

in the 2000s my university charged like $300 for summer storage BUT you could buy surplus FIM-29 Stinger launcher cases for $200 so i put my clothes and books in one, sunk it in the river by my dorm, and retrieved it fall semester they’re hard to find now and i regret selling it

Everyone arguing about whether the Midjourney Scanner can replace an MRI or CT is missing the point. The reason it's reasonating so broadly, and especially with technologists, is that it could create a beautiful opportunity for The Bitter Lesson to get a foothold in healthcare. Almost all of our medical data has been totally bastardized by the way we capture and store it. The EHR is supposed to be a medical record, but it is really a billing system. Every patient encounter gets compressed into a lossy template or heuristic just to facilitate billing logic. The Bitter Lesson is simple. AI gets powerful when you feed it raw, unfiltered data and let learning, search, and compute to the work. Stop worrying about whether AI can sharpen the resolution of the ultrasonic tomography. If the images get prettier for human interpretation, that will just be a nice bonus. The actual goal should be to capture as much raw signal of a person's clinical state as possible. Connect that signal to similar measurement of future outcomes. Then let a model learn from that data with minimal imposition of human judgment or measurement. Start with the assumption that we don't even necessarily know what we're looking for. This is the way to actually do great medical science. I've watched this play out in endoscopy. As an example, historically we would take 15-20 minute colonoscopy videos of patients with ulcerative colitis and compress it down into a Mayo score of 0, 1, 2, or 3 based on the single worst moment of the entire video. So much data wasted just because we needed a human-digestible heuristic. It turns out if you instead capture all of that raw data and use it to train a self-supervised model, those embeddings can actually learn far more about a patient's disease state. So much more that they can actually predict treatment outcomes. This is why I'm personally fired up about the Midjourney Scanner. Don't think about it like an MRI or CT. Think of it as a beautiful fountain of human health data.

Why am I investing in aerospace innovation in New Zealand? One reason: you can launch and iterate 10x faster. The key is airspace. Check out Christchurch vs. Florida images below. Excited to be involved with this one.
Why is New Zealand a hotbed for Aerospace innovation, especially rockets and high-speed flight? Airspace. Even White Sands Missile Range is not wide enough to turn around a Mach 5 vehicle in a 3g turn. We have thousands of miles of open air and sea space. Almost nothing between us, Antarctica and South America. And a test site only 45min drive south of our headquarters. This is a structural advantage Dawn will carry forward almost indefinitely. This is why we build the world’s highest-performance aircraft in New Zealand.
