🚨 BREAKING: Aston Villa have announced they will initiate legal action against Jamie Carragher following what they describe as “unacceptable insults” towards the club and its supporters. Chairman Nassef Sawiris insists Villa will not allow anyone to stop their rise in English and European football.
On Stick to Football, Carragher discussed Unai Emery potentially joining Man Utd: “Aston Villa will never be Manchester United… There is a chain in football, whether you like it or not… teams below Aston Villa, they’ll take their players or manager, so shut the f*** up Aston Villa fans. Aston Villa will never be Manchester United.”

Status today It has never been awarded again. There are no official plans or standing regulations for a second Super Ballon d’Or (it is not connected to any current public votes or special trophies organized by France Football). The physical trophy was later auctioned and its current location is not publicly confirmed. en.wikipedia.org In short, the “rules” applied only to that single 1989 edition: eligibility limited to multi-time Ballon d’Or winners (European at the time), judged as the best over three decades via the three voting groups described above. It is not an active or recurring award.

🐎🤯 Did you know a dispute over a RACEHORSE helped pave the way for the Glazers to buy Manchester United? It all started with Sir Alex Ferguson and a champion racehorse called Rock of Gibraltar. Ferguson believed he owned 50% of the horse, including its incredibly valuable stud rights, potentially worth tens of millions of pounds. But Irish businessman John Magnier, who was also a major Manchester United shareholder, disputed his claim. The disagreement turned into a bitter legal battle, with Magnier and fellow shareholder JP McManus putting pressure on Ferguson and demanding investigations into United's transfer dealings. The relationship completely broke down and led to a settlement out of court and was followed by Magnier and McManus putting their shares up for sale. In May 2005, they sold their combined 28.7% stake in Manchester United to Malcolm Glazer, giving him the controlling interest he needed to complete his takeover. The Glazers then took control of United through a debt-funded takeover that would change the club's financial future forever. All because of a falling-out over a horse. 🐎😳

Lionel Messi still leads Ronaldo in the total number of hat-tricks scored. Ronaldo fans are too noisy, tbh. 😭

2 journalists did NOT put the Ballon d'Or in the Top 10. - 3 journalists did NOT put the Ballon d'Argent in the Top 10. - 4 journalists did NOT put the Ballon de Bronze in the Top 10. And then they try to sell us that these awards have more value because they are chosen by "specialists."

🗣️ Gary Neville: "The Glazers have to sell Manchester United now." 🗣️ Roy Keane: "How did the Glazers get involved in the first place?" Neville: "We know that Roy..." Roy Keane: "There's a HORSE involved in this! No one wants to talk about the horse. Can we talk about the horse? The horse is KEY!" 😭😭 For new fans who don't know: Man United's downfall started because of a HORSE named Rock of Gibraltar. Sir Alex Ferguson and Irish billionaire John Magnier co-owned the horse. They had a fallout over who owned the horse and its breeding rights. Magnier owned shares in Man United. To get back at Fergie, he sold his shares to the Glazers. The Glazers then used THAT to buy United with DEBT. £600m+ debt loaded on the club. Hundreds of millions in debt. From 2005 till today. One horse destroyed the biggest club in the world. 🤯 And Neville doesn't want to talk about it... Do you think Man United will ever recover while the Glazers are still there?

Mbappé’s argument for the 2023 Ballon d’Or starts with the 2022 World Cup final. On December 18th in Lusail, Qatar, he became the second player in history to score a hat-trick in a World Cup final, matching Geoff Hurst’s feat from 1966. He scored in the 80th minute to make it 2-0 France, again in the 81st to level at 2-2, and once more in the 118th minute of extra time to force penalties. Argentina won those penalties 4-2, but Mbappé’s night was historic regardless of the result. At club level with Paris Saint-Germain, he was the focal point of the attack in Ligue 1, which PSG won that season. He was the most dangerous forward in France’s top flight and carried a team that, despite its resources, often looked dependent on him for goals and creativity. Internationally, he was the heartbeat of a French side still considered one of the best in the world, even if they fell just short in the final. So why didn’t he win? The Ballon d’Or isn’t purely a stats award, and it never has been. It’s a combination of individual performance, team success, and narrative weight — and in 2023, Messi’s narrative was simply overwhelming. Messi had just captained Argentina to their first World Cup since 1986. That alone is the single most prestigious trophy in football, and he delivered it at age 35, in a tournament where he was widely seen as the best player on the pitch across the entire competition. He scored seven goals, including the winner in the final against France — the same match where Mbappé scored his hat-trick. Messi then moved to Inter Miami in Major League Soccer, became the first player to win the Ballon d’Or while playing outside Europe, and did it with a third different club, adding PSG to Barcelona and Argentina. The story was too big to ignore. Haaland, meanwhile, posted numbers that look almost fictional: 52 goals in 53 games for Manchester City, who completed the treble — Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League. That’s a level of goal-scoring efficiency that transcends position. Forwards don’t usually score a goal per game over a full season, let alone across three competitions. Mbappé’s problem was that his peak individual moment — the final hat-trick — came in a losing cause, and his club season, while excellent, didn’t match the trophy-laden campaigns of Messi or Haaland. PSG won Ligue 1 but went out of the Champions League in the round of 16. France, despite Mbappé’s brilliance, didn’t win anything in 2023. The Ballon d’Or voters reward players whose individual excellence translates into silverware, and in 2023, that pointed to Messi and Haaland. There’s also a historical pattern worth noting. The Ballon d’Or has a long memory for World Cup moments, but it tends to favor the winner over the runner-up, even when the runner-up has the more spectacular individual performance. Think of 2014, when Messi lost to Ronaldo despite scoring in the final. Or 2006, when Zidane’s final and red card didn’t outweigh Cannavaro’s Italy winning the tournament. The award has always leaned toward the champion. Mbappé will likely get more Ballon d’Or consideration in future years if he wins a World Cup or Champions League. His talent is undeniable. But 2023 belonged to Messi’s story — the World Cup, the eighth trophy, the barrier-breaking move to Miami. That’s what the voters chose, and it’s hard to argue the decision was wrong.

Lionel Messi will be available for Inter Miami’s game against New England Revolution on Sunday night despite receiving his fifth yellow card of the MLS season, which would typically trigger a one-game suspension. Ordinarily, five cautions would keep him out of his next game. But for years, MLS has had a disciplinary provision that can reduce a player’s yellow-card tally if he has gone a sustained period without one. It is a rule that usually goes unnoticed, but given Messi’s stature, it has come to light again, and it has proven particularly useful for the player and Inter Miami as the MLS regular season comes to a close. 🔗 nyti.ms/4e7K5LY
