The surgeons in our faculty are the mainstay of our courses, training surgeons in countries where there is conflict and catastrophe. We could not do this work without them.
If we were a theatre production company, these are the performers.
All our faculty are working full time in hospitals in the UK beyond, taking time off to come and work with us as trainers in our courses.
This is Sorour Ghandour, a consultant obstetric and gynaecology surgeon from Egypt talking about what motivates him to do this kind of work. He was with us in Syria last month - where we trained 133 Syrian doctors.

This is a shout out to congratulate the amazing Jason Hollands and Petra Risbridger who just completed the Amsterdam marathon - Petra at 3.51 and Jason at 4.29.
They had already raised £3.5K before setting out, which was then matched by Petra's work so they have made an incredible £7K for our Foundation. Our gratitude knows no bounds. Thank you!
If you'd like to donate to keep that number rising their fundraising page is here:

Our amazing Co-Founder David Nott, catching a heart in front of guests at our latest 'Sips and Sutures' - a regular event where we invite people to learn about our work. One of our team lobbed David a prosthetic heart from the shelf so he could show it to guests and it was quite a catch. We learned later that as well as being the world's most renowned war surgeon, a skilled aviator, skier and rugby player, he also had a great talent for cricket.
We also welcomed VIktoriia Teslenko, one of our anaesthetic faculty from Ukraine, who presented on our bespoke equipment alongside anaesthetic faculty member Jenny Illingworth, and thank you to Brenna Weaver and Jemilat Gbadamosi for taking care of the obstetrics and gynaecology presentation and helping Sarah Jane Benham with the delivery of a prosthetic baby.
Huge thanks to everyone who came to make the evening such a success. We couldn't do any of this without our supporters.
As our CEO James Gough said: People are quite simply the foundation of our Foundation.
Juno Wang is a general surgeon from Taiwan. We are always very glad to hear from surgeons who’ve been through our training courses, not least because their positive feedback justifies the need for our work and helps us hone and improve the courses with each documented experience.
Juno’s accounts of her time working as a humanitarian surgeon in Kaju Keji, South Sudan, near the border with Uganda, give us a detailed and encouraging picture of quite how many skills our surgeons acquire when attending our Hostile Environment Training Course (HEST®-UK) held biannually with, and accredited by, the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, and how directly they can be put to use in both humanitarian and conflict settings.
We called Juno to find out some of the details of her time working in South Sudan, and here is her account of how this specialised war training with our team in Edinburgh prepared her for working in low resource settings and enabled her to share her skills with local surgeons that she worked alongside.
Read all about it in our latest Substack.

"I want to help the people here, because the people suffered for a long time. I stayed here all the time in the war - I watched it. Most of the doctors leave Syria and go. I am the only obstetrics and gynaecology doctor in all my area. I told my husband if all the people leave Syria and go, who is staying here to help these people? I choose to stay with the people. And I look to the future."

"I've always been invested in humanitarian work. The more I got involved, the more I wanted to do it. It's so rewarding, you get to share your knowledge and your skills and meet so many different types of people. And I also learn so much from the people I interact with in all parts of the world. I feel enriched."

'For me, the basics is the disparity in maternal healthcare. By the accident of birth, you can be born in a country where you or your friends, family, sisters, siblings have a high risk of dying through pregnancy and pregnancy related complications. That's what motivates me.'
Dr Pippa Letchworth is a consultant in obstetrics and gynaecology and one of our longest serving faculty surgeons.
Here she packs a 'Pippa' pouch named after her. This was the incentive of @OliverBonas, our fabulous corporate partner, who named some of their products after our female surgeons. And here Pip talks about what motivates her to do what she does.
Buy one of these products, and a proportion of the proceeds is given to our Foundation to support our work training surgeons in countries facing conflict and catastrophe.
Go out and grab yourself a 'Pippa' bag and think of our surgeons as they prepare for their vital work.

“I’ve always wanted justification for spending my life doing what I’m doing. We know we’re not brain surgeons, or politicians. It is good to know that the struggle is worth it, that all the pestering and nit-picking we do is really for some good purpose.”
– Janet Ahlberg, Illustrator
I have been designing for over 14 years for (mostly) charities and feel privileged to direct my professional focus on something purposeful in this world. But there is nothing quite like being in a room full of qualified trauma surgeons to make you feel like “just a designer”.
