She said male guards watched and laughed through a partially open curtain and may have filmed the attack. Israeli forces seized Liedtke’s Gaza-bound aid ship in international waters on October 8 and imprisoned her for five days. She said the rape and other abuse were intended to traumatize activists into abandoning Palestine solidarity: “They want to break our will and silence us.” Liedtke said her assault was part of a systematic pattern and “way, way less than what Palestinian prisoners experience.” More than a dozen other flotilla activists have reported sexual assault, several anonymously. The complaint alleges attempted grievous bodily harm, assault, and a breach of use-of-force rules, according to the European Legal Support Center, which is backing her case with lawyer Willem Jebbink. It follows a police integrity committee’s finding that the violence had been “necessary,” a conclusion reached by the force investigating itself, the ELSC noted, without publishing the investigation’s contents. Mahmoud, who fled war in Syria and had gone to the Netherlands seeking safety with her husband, a Palestinian from Gaza, went into early labor after the May 19 incident and gave birth days later. “This fight is about accountability for institutional racism and violence inflicted on asylum seekers in general, and Palestinians in particular,” ELSC said.
