ALT Title reads: Radon in Water. Well Water Contamination. OWRC logo. Radon is an odorless, invisible gas from rocks, soil and water that can enter homes through cracks or well water. Long-term exposure increases lung cancer risk. The EPA estimate radon causes 21,000 U.S. lung cancer deaths per year. Smokers have a 10x greater risk of radon causing lung cancer. Only testing reveals radon levels. Test in the following situations: when buying or selling a home, never tested or if radon levels are unknown, before or after renovations and before spending extended time in the basement (ex. bedroom). If groundwater is contaminated with radon – showering, washing dishes and doing laundry can disturb the water and release radon gas into the air you breath. Well water treatment includes aeration or granular activated carbon, point-of-use devices will NOT reduce radon in water.
