#ONGC strikes gas in the deep waters of Mahanadi Basin.
MDW-28, the maiden well of ONGC’s current deepwater campaign in the Mahanadi Basin is flowing gas with encouraging rates and sustained reservoir pressure.
The campaign was launched on 25 July 2026 by Hon'ble Minister of Petroleum & Natural Gas Shri @HardeepSPuri, with the spudding of MDW-28 (MN-DW18-1-H-D) in the deep offshore Mahanadi Basin, aligned with the Government's Samudra Manthan initiative.
The well was perforated on 18 September 2026 following evaluation of subsurface data. It is currently flowing with a good gas rate and healthy reservoir pressure. During operations, ONGC @ChairmanONGC @singharunongc, Director (Technology & Field Services) @vikramsONGC, and Director (Exploration) @opsinhaONGC visited the drillship to interact with and encourage the crew onboard. This find, along with other discoveries in the area, can be a candidate for development through shared facilities enabled by the PNG Rules, 2025, bringing deepwater resources onstream.
ONGC will continue to push into deep and ultra-deepwater frontiers in the search for hydrocarbons, and towards India's goal of energy security.
Hopefully, a new chapter in India's energy frontier.

Energy is the fulcrum of India’s economy and the engine of Viksit Bharat under the leadership of PM Sh @narendramodi Ji. With India set to drive about 30% of global incremental energy demand over the next two decades, and with 88% of our crude oil and about 50% of our natural gas still imported, the way forward is simple is to produce more and depend less.
Active exploration has increased to 12 % of the country's sedimentary basin area and, with the award of OALP-X and XI blocks, is expected to reach 19%.
81% of the active exploration area has been awarded after 2014, underscoring the scale and impact of the reforms undertaken over the past decade Our target is to reach 1 million sqkm of exploration acreage by 2030.
DSF Bid Round IV was launched on 15 April 2025. It offered 55 discoveries, grouped into nine contract areas across five sedimentary basins, covering 6,133.02 sqkm. Three onland areas account for 1,120.91 square kilometres; six offshore areas cover 5,012.11 square kilometres.
Together, these 55 discoveries hold an estimated 260 million tonnes of oil equivalent of in-place volume.
9 new private sector players participated in DSF-IV which shows that reform is meaningful when it improves the terms on which companies can invest, take technical decisions and bring fields into production.
India's domestic hydrocarbon production will receive a boost through the visionary Samudra Manthan programme, launched by PM Modi Ji, which aims to unlock offshore resources through new seismic surveys, shared drilling costs for around 60 deep- and ultra-deep-water wells, and common offshore infrastructure.
DSF-IV and Samudra Manthan are two halves of one strategy to develop what we have discovered; explore what remains beyond our reach.

Giving unused space a renewed purpose, #ONGC Mumbai has brought a long-vacant premium office on the 16th floor of Maker Tower, Mumbai, into productive use under #SpecialCampaign6.
The initiative has transformed approximately 18,300 sq. ft. of unutilised office space into a revenue-generating asset, with expected lease revenue of over ₹23 crore over five years.
Alongside generating revenue, it provides another key institution with quality office infrastructure, demonstrating how efficient asset management can serve institutional needs while delivering greater value from public resources.

Maharashtra's Compressed Biogas (CBG) landscape was a key focus at today's GOBARdhan workshop in Mumbai, offering a closer look at the state's production potential, project pipeline and emerging investment opportunities.
The state plays a pivotal role in India's evolving energy landscape.
Peak electricity demand is projected to reach approximately 45 GW by 2030. An estimated ₹3.3–3.4 lakh crore investment is required across power generation, transmission and distribution. The state's CBG Policy also aims for one plant per taluka.
For India Energy Week 2027, these insights add a valuable regional perspective to the wider opportunities for bioenergy development, technology partnerships and investment across India's energy sector.
