Important: If you’re not sure whether the situation is a true emergency, officials recommend calling 911 and letting the call-taker determine whether you need emergency help.
“Courage doesn't always roar. Sometimes courage is the little voice at the end of the day that says I'll try again tomorrow.”
- Mary Anne Radmacher
Give yourself a little grace today. You're doing great.
A protection order is a court order, not a security system. This guide explains how the process works, what filing puts on the record, and why service is a warning to the other person. It names the terms you need at the courthouse, covers evidence and enforcement, and says plainly what the order can or cannot do.

Spies and survivors share one challenge: communicating when someone may be watching. This article explores how code words, backup channels, compartmentalization, identity checks, safer devices, and careful message planning can help survivors stay connected. The key lesson is simple: there’s no perfect secret channel, only a plan built for the survivor’s situation and support system.

Recent breakup? Ending a relationship used to mean returning keys and picking up boxes. Today it also means passwords, shared streaming profiles, location sharing you both forgot was on, a thermostat account in their name, and a phone plan you're both still on. A "digital breakup" is the process of finding all of those connections and deciding, on your terms, which ones to close.

Operation Safe Escape supports the SAFE for Survivors Act of 2026 (S. 4635 and H.R. 8965), which would give survivors up to 40 workdays of safe leave, 10 of them paid, plus workplace accommodations, unemployment eligibility, and insurance and privacy protections. We urge Congress to advance the bill and further strengthen its technology-facilitated abuse provisions.

A Georgia woman finally learned how her ex always knew where she was: he was a police chief, and he had run her plate roughly 600 times. At least 50 officers have been accused of the same thing. Flock's new safeguards catch misuse after the fact. Survivors are still never told they were searched.

When was the last time you checked your social media privacy settings? Have you ever?
Sometimes privacy settings and options can change, potentially exposing your private information in ways you don't expect. Periodically review your settings and make sure only people you trust know what you're up to.
The Safe Connections Act of 2022 helps protect survivors of abuse and other crimes by helping them leave a shared phone plan, even if they're not the account owner. Although the validation requirement for the carrier represents an unfair burden for the survivor, it's was a major step forward in survivor safety and one more tool they have available.

It wasn't about the banana.
In 2024, a redditor made a post titled "My bf asked for the banana & now I've got the ick." To some, it sounded like a joke or a minor relationship hiccup. Others saw it for what it was. Two years later, she returned and shared how serious it actually was.

The question is not whether survivors are strong enough. They already are.
The question is whether communities, systems, workplaces, and support networks are willing to become safe enough.
For many survivors of abuse, navigating the justice system can feel overwhelming. Criminal, Civil, and Family Courts all have different roles and processes. We've developed a toolkit to help you understand what to expect, what happens next, and how to get the legal help you deserve.
