Have you had a chance to visit our Trash Monster created by artists Gabriel Friedman and @deniseduong in partnership with @OKCBeautiful on display at Scissortail Park?
This sculpture sits near the corner of South Robinson and SW 15th Street and is made entirely from locally collected litter from OKC Beautiful clean-up projects.
Local artist, Gabriel Friedman designed the monster to bring attention to the ever-growing problem of trash on a local and global scale. A small girl, illustrated by Denise Duong, faces off with the head of a giant trash monster. The girl represents the next generation that will be forced to face the issue of trash pollution. She is facing it down to express that the next generation will have the courage to try to address the issue and make real changes.
In honor of #WorldEnvironmentDay today and their efforts to #BeatPlasticPollution, we wanted to reintroduce our Trash Monster as a reminder to help reduce, reuse and recycle.
As OKC Beautiful points out, consider the items you buy and how many. What could be reduced? Where are the options to reuse? What disposable items do you use that could be avoided? How can we use less stuff?
Join the fight against our monster of trash – don’t let him grow!

It’s International Compost Awareness Week! Composting is important because:
🌱 Adds organic matter to soil, benefiting plants
💧 Soil moisture retention
🪱 Attracts beneficial decomposers
🗑️ Decreases landfill waste
💨 Sequesters carbon
🌤️ Decreased methane produced in landfills

If just half of food scraps flowing to landfills and incinerators were diverted to community composters, over 50,000 new jobs could be created from composting alone.
That's on par with the coal mining industry.
