WHO went along with the government's denial of covid and never called on the government to report deaths. ILO publishes the findings from the ILO’s observance of the 2025 cotton harvest in Turkmenistan, with a particular focus on child labour and forced labour. Most concerningly, the observance documents a clear increase in children’s presence in cotton fields compared to 2024, despite strengthened legal prohibitions. Public employees continued to participate in cotton picking. Available data do not demonstrate a decisive overall change compared to 2024. Refusal to participate in forced cotton picking could entail social, economic or employment-related consequences. These reported perceptions raise questions about the voluntariness of participation for some workers.
