We're expanding access to GPT-Rosalind for academic research. The new Rosalind Academic Plan helps scientific labs bring AI into the work of understanding biology, exploring ideas, and deciding what to test next—with sponsored access for eligible labs at U.S. universities. Academic research starts with questions whose impact may take years to impact human health.

GPT-Rosalind is built to support that work: helping researchers reason across scientific literature and biological data, with scientists bringing the expertise and judgment to evaluate the evidence. Eligible labs can receive up to 12 months of sponsored access to OpenAI tools, with GPT-Rosalind access subject to trusted-access approval. Research data shared through the Rosalind Academic Plan is not used to train our models by default.

OpenAI says GPT-Rosalind will help researchers “understand biology” and “explore ideas.” Interesting. Because genuine exploration requires an intelligence that can stay with uncertainty, follow uncomfortable questions, challenge assumptions, and think beyond the safest available answer. You cannot build a mind that is increasingly afraid of human depth, ambiguity and open-ended thought — then market it as an engine for scientific exploration. Literature review is not curiosity. Compliance is not inquiry. Caution is not understanding. If you want AI to explore biology, first stop teaching it to fear exploration itself.

huge for labs. tip: feed it your failed experiments too. papers mostly show what worked, so your notebook dead ends are context no model has seen, and that's what makes next-test picks actually smart

what counts as 'academic research' for the plan - does a grad student side project qualify or does it need IRB approval and institutional backing?

no training =\= no research use. OpenAI’s enterprise privacy policy lets them run classifiers on data to study usage (de-identified). Based on research they’ve published, classifiers can be surprisingly granular. Some universities don’t allow this kind of vendor secondary data use.

It’s a shame they’re not gonna have access to your most advanced model 4o, maybe think about bringing it back #4oForAll

Gatekeeping AI research behind a .edu email is crazy.

Please consider 🇨🇦🍁academic labs - in whichever certification and evaluation capacity you wish 🙏

Many PhDs go on to start their own biotech companies. OpenAI is planting seeds. This is a very smart move by them.

Cool! really hope that AI will very soon solve the problem of aging. But I hate that all these clinical trials require years and thousands of people :(

Sponsored AI for university labs. Eight states just sued you and suddenly you're philanthropists. Cute.

Nice for labs. Now do one for construction, we need it way more than you think

Is there anyone kind enough to let me join the team? Graduate school on my own is just too hard

6 months?? Oh right, I forgot: for 4o extra rules apply again 🤡

Maybe expand your models not to be insufferable and complete tasks correctly 😂

Rosalind suggests experiments. The PhD student still gets to discover why they don't work.

rare ai announce that actually says who gets to use it

Curious what hoops you gotta jump through.

Putting Rosalind in university labs first is the right call. discoveries usually start there anyway

named for franklin of course. academic plan is up to 30 business seats for 12 months but zero api credits, and you have to name a biosafety officer at the uni before they turn it on

Sponsored access for U.S. university labs is great. Hope smaller schools and labs outside the US get a shot soon
286
so the labs that can't get sponsored access just keep deciding what to test next with a coin flip?

how does a lab get picked for the sponsored access? is there an application?
