ALT "Pentecost" is from the Greek Pentekostos which means fiftieth. We celebrate Pentecost on the 50th day after Easter. On Pentecost, "the mission of the Christ and of the Spirit became the mission of the Church which is sent to proclaim and spread the mystery of the communion of the Holy Trinity." After the example of Mary and the disciples on the first Pentecost on which "the Church came to birth," we pray and wait for the same Spirit graciously promised by Jesus and listen with quiet hearts to the Word of the Lord. We recall... "When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability." ACTS 2:1-4

ALT The Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord celebrates the entry of Jesus' humanity into divine glory in God's heavenly domain, 40 days after his Resurrection. From the Bible: “Then he led them out as far as Bethany, and, lifting up his hands, he blessed them. While he was blessing them, he withdrew from them and was carried up into heaven. And they worshiped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy; and they were continually in the temple blessing God.” Luke 24.50-53 "As we contemplate the mystery of the Ascension, may we, too, bear joyful witness to the Lord's resurrection, his loving presence in our midst, and the triumph of his Kingdom of life, holiness and love."
